  • ideas for backrest and luggage

With the 1100 being my only functional motorcycle it has to fofill all my motorcycle needs. I have finally started getting the Mrs. out on bike for more road trips. She has commented on occasion that she would like a backrest. I want removable hard luggage. I started looking through the forums but so far have not found anyone with the exact setup I am looking for (even after looking at 36 pages of bike photos, well worth the time by the way).

Let me try to describe it and see if anyone has seen anything like it.

    1. backrest
    2. supports for side hard luggage
    3. space for 3rd hard luggage behind passenger
    4. all luggage removable
    5. armrests (dont flame me too bad but Goldwings do have an incredibly comfortable passenger seat for this reason)
    6. looks good.

I know that last one is very subjective however I tend not to like the samsonite or vetter bags. I dont think they are consistent with the lines of the bike. I dont have a fairing on my bike either. I really like the look of raqumup's setup from this thread.....
    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...t=luggage+rack
but no arm rests and I dont think the bags are easily removable.

So what do you guys think. Would this have to be a custom one off?

Most "hard bags" come off with a key.
Some even have a convenient handle to carry em.

I've seen a few back rests but most were not in the lounge chair catagory. May need to make your own. Have seen a couple modified XJ's that came out pretty good.

My '80 standard that I just got came with a trunk and hard bags. My digi camera died so I can't take a pic. There are still pics of it on the dealer's website at http://www.motorcycleminnesota.com (scroll down to the yamaha section where you will see my xs). My wife doesn't mind the backrest/trunk combo. If you found the right brackets or you are handy, you could make some armrest supports to attach on the trunk supports. I'm not sure the make of the trunk but it looks like what came on the xs touring bikes from the original ads on this site. The bags are triangle shapped vetters which easily removes with the key (they're pretty ugly but are handy). You can see the brackets in the third picture. The trunk is bolted on.

I'm not willing to part with anything but I'd thought I'd give share with you what I had in case that helps with your search. I will admit my bags are ugly but the trunk looks okay.

And before anyone comments about the description of my bike by the dealer, I know some (okay, most) of his details are off for a '80 model, but at least he had some idea what he had. Also, his prices are listed as high but I got a fair enough deal to make me happy.

          Hey Nezzer,

You might be a redneck if you put on some like these , but they are lightweight aluminum, just will need some welding and fabricating skills to get it done! It even has an adjustable backrest for myself, as well as the passenger!!

I didn't make the trunk dettachable, but I'm sure I could have!

But yeah, you're probably looking at one off types. There are some that were made for the XS11's, but you might not like their styling?? Folks have fitted newer styled ones from some other later model bikes, like Venturers, FJ's, or such! Good Luck!

I do like the looks of your setup BossMaverick. So far I have not seen anything like that on ebay but I will keep my eyes open. TopCap, I dig the setup. The adjustable drivers backrest is a great idea. My welding skills, especially aluminum, are lacking but I have been looking for an excuse. I just need to find a buddy with the gear first.

The Givi bags certainly do look nice. A buddy of mine has back bag that looks just like their E52 model. The minute I opened his bag and realized I could put TWO helmets in it, I was in love. I didnt see a mounting kits for the 1100 on their site but thats not too surprising. I will send off a quick email and see what they say. If a kit already exists that will certainly save me time. If not, well at least I can try making my perfect setup, armrests and all.

                Do what I did

                Hi Nezzer,
if you want to haul your Mrs in comfort and carry loads of stuff, use the ultimate luggage carrier, a sidecar.

I have an extra set of venture hard bags that are removable with a key, have all the mounting hardware, but don't know if they will work out for the xs 1100. Later 'Dog

you can see what is on my bike HERE

the setup I have is factory luggage rack, factory saddlebag frames and crash guard. I bought river road xlarge saddlebags and made quick connects for them.... drilled two holes in the saddle bag frame towards the bottom, then drilled matching hole in bags. ran a bolt through with hole drilled perpendicular in the end. then put washer and a lynch pin (the ones that look like a double looped capital R). the tops zip together. You can put this under the seat or over the seat. If you mount under the seat, the bags are not really detachable, because the edge of seat obstructs zipper function. over the seat looks tacky, but I have a gel seat for my wife that covers it up.

found a brand new (20 some year old) vetter trunk that just screamed to be mounted on the luggage rack. I rewired the lights for 1157 bulbs and put LED's in them. Two outside are running/turn inside running/brake.

The bags are big enough that if you have the chrome trim that attaches to the crash bars in front of saddle bags, you wont be able to use it. They are made of a synthetic leather that has held up well, and shine up really nice with meguiars rubber and vinyl cleaner. I would consider them semi-hard bags... they have some sort of hard plastic in them to keep their shape.

Oh, the vetter trunk has a backrest built in, so the sissy bar/back rest that came with the luggage rack is sitting in my garage, unused.

shoot me a pm if you have questions or are confused with anything I tried to explain.
