What should a complete paint job cost?

I really value your input ... interesting what you're both saying about the guns.

My situation where I live at, however, is just not conducive to painting. Lots of broken up ground ... dust and dirt up the kaazoo ... Although I have painted a few cars and am familiar with the process, I just can't imagine anything but a bad result or a big waste of time doing this one myself.

I have just now gotten a price of 750 bucks for EVERYTHING ... shop has credentials ... and I think that's alot more reasonable than the 12 or 15 hundred I've been quoted so far ...

Thats a good Price Wiz always pays to shop around LOl i just gave a quote of 25K to do a custom job on a 41 Willys coupe so il eb busy for a while good luck and cant wait to see bike when done. are you doing a single color or dual colors?

... and if you were real smart (instead of sitting there asking yourself questions), you'd realize that they go to tech and trade schools to learn that stuff.
And anyone who's been to a trade school, knows that they're always looking for projects for the students to get graded on.
I recall spending two years working on other people's bikes whilst I was a'learnin'. The school couldn't charge for the labor, so the "customer" just had to supply the parts.
Of course, the building next door held the Auto Body Class.
Bring your car in, they'd do the dent and prep work, then spray. You supplied the paint. Same for motorcycles. They'd paint anything.

Trade schools, ya gotta love them!

Trade Schools: Free haircuts, free Dental work, free massages, facials and manicures....
These places are everywhere!
Hell, when I'm lying on the couch watching Maury... there's about four or five commercials for "Be a massage therapist", "Be a dental hygienist", "Learn Rectal Exam"...


Find the local Jr. College or tech/trade school, and go there and talk with the instructor.

Like Prom said you can use your stuff for projects for the kids and they wont let it leave looking bad. i tottaly forgot about that route. always worth a try.

Perish the thought, my young friend .. I'm already over my comfort level in XS11s .... but .... hell, .... why not just use the settlement money to put an down pmt on a condo with a garage and then rattle can that sucker?

Compressor addiction

Hi Wiz,
you just gotta get an air compressor.
They ain't just for spraying paint, every tool with an electric motor has an air-driven equivalent that you can leave the catalog around for at Christmas & your birthday. And it'll blow your tires up too.

Fred, my fine Canadian friend , I have a pretty cool compressor practically new ... 240V, 12cfm, 150 psi, 60gal tank and a slew of airtools. It'll run a drill or a sander too .... Unfortunately there is no place here to hook it up and use it .. so it sits, lonely, in a dark corner by itself, surronded by road cases and black widows. Sniff Sniff. A pretty sore subject with me since the owner here was s'posed to set up an 'auto shop' when I moved in and never has. So I work outside, in the heat or whatever; ducking into a bit of shade here or there ... it kinda' sucks, frankly. On the other hand, I know there are some guys here on this site that don't even have ANYplace to work on anything, so I don't mean to sound ungrateful.

Where I live is at a sound and theater production company .... every nook and cranny in every out-building is literally stuffed to the rafters with amp racks, line arrays and giant speakers and wire and cable by the ton. Besides, the owner here is a packrat as well .... a nightmare .... I really do intend to move someplace else when an opportunity presents itself. Times being as uncertain as they are, I hesitate to make another bad move ... I'm gettin too old for all this crap. Ok ... I'm better now.
