I know you can't go the other way do to the later bike having the ignition box under the middle of the seat but I think that's the only difference.

If it is an 81 Special model the 78 seat rear cowling will probably hit the grab bar and tail light on the 81.
      My 2 cents.

        I don't know what year/model seats will inter-change.
For sure 78/79's don't fit 80/81's. As Geezer pointed out the TCI was relocated on the latter.

Altho the 80 special seat sorta fits the 79 special, I have to remove the seat to get the side covers off or use the helmut lock as the sides of the seat hang lower than a regular 79 does.

78 seat will not fit anything but a 78. The bottom lip on the 78 pan is lower than the side covers on my 79F. Without the side covers, I can get the seat on. 80 and 81 have different shaped side covers thqn the 79F and the 78.

Just a question on this.. My seat I can bend into the letter C .. or its straight on the bike bolted down hehe.. (i duct taped up the bottom of the pan so rust flakes wont fall into the air snorkle).

I have a standard 79.. So 78 seat pan wont work from that last post , and am I understanding it right the later seats wont work??.. so only a 79 pan will work for me?? (or aftermarket)?
sorry to jump into this post but its the appropriate subject

This seat has a travelcade replacement cover on it and was recovered a couple years ago and have been given excellent care. It's a 1979 standard model seat with the tail section and all hardware.

If you don't like the original seat, you won't like this one any better. It's a nice example of an original seat.

Send me an eMail at technojock@yahoo.com and I'll eMail you pix of the seat.

Clark, the 78 seat pan edges by the side covers drop down farther than the 79, it can not be bolted down unless the side covers are removed. I bought a custom aftermarket seat from a 78, and now I will take the foam and cover off it and put them on a 79 pan. The later and special seats would work, but the TCI box must be relocated, and possibly the inner fender matching the seat used. I put an 80 special seat on my 79 special and had to trim the bottom edges of the pan. If you compare pictures of the various models, you will see that the side covers are shaped differently in the different years. Except for the location of the TCI box, and the side cover clearance, all pans will mount to the mounting brackets.
