  • 2nd & 3rd gears

hi there all: could there be any other reason for 2nd & 3rd to jump out of gear other than
the regular repair. bike was stolen gone for 3 week only 500 miles put on it. bike ran
great before hoping there could be a easier
fix. I don’t think so but I do hope

I've never heard of 3rd gear going out... but I don't see why it couldn't?? On your 4th gear, there are some square dogs that engage 1st gear on one side of it, and then regular oval shaped dogs that engage 3rd gear.

Long answer short... Do the gear fix on all the gears and you should be good to go if that is what the problem is. Since 2nd and 3rd are isolated from each other, I'm guessing that that will fix you up.

Well, until recently, this year, I also had not heard of 3rd gear popping out, but did hear about one. Once the shift fork puts them together, it's the gears themselves that essentially keep them together, NOT the pressure from the shift forks. SO...once you put them in gear, and then they pop out and back into gear, sounds like they need grinding!

Like Tod said, while you're in there, work on 4th/1st as well, because they probably are not far behind 2nd/5th!!

Sorry to hear about it getting stolen, but glad to hear that you got it back in otherwise good condition aside from the new gear problems!!
