  • Harley mufflers on 81 xs1100sh

I have a 81 xs1100sh and want to put the harley mufflers on. I've seen a few threads on here but on the 81 there is no straight pipe. Right after the weld of the y the mufflers start coneing out.
Just wondering if any one else has tried putting the mufflers on the 81 or not. Is there a pipe inside the muffler I can use or do I have to weld a new pipe on the end of the y pipe.
    Thanks

There is only one section of pipe...no pipe in a pipe there.
Cut as far back as possible. I used a short section of straight pipe to extend the muffs further. I think the extension helps with reducing the dead spot in the rpm range due to harmonics (about 3000 rpms). At least it helped mine. This requires two good quality pipe clamps which are available at the Harley dealerships. Pricey but good. The section of pipe was available at Autozone and is made to slip over existinh pipe on one of its ends. I belive I slotted that end to make the clamp work. You will have to determine how to hang the muffs to the frame. Do no welding. If there is any possible way to save your crossover, do it. I have not done this, but maybe you can weld the existing cross-over pipe the the short sections that are used. I may explore that someday when the Jardines crap out.

PS Save your center stand if it will not fit. You will need it to remove your rear tire and other stuff. It is an easy temporary bolt-on to lift your bike.

Thanks. I think I will weld the pipe to the header and then just slide the muffler on so it can be changes. I pulled the head sheild off and these things are pretty cobbled up already. So I will just weld a new pipe on the end. I have access to a pipe bender and expander So If this doesn't work I might just make my own set of headers.

Thanks again that's what I needed to know.

Wow that went way to easy. I used 1 3/4 OD pipe and expanded one end to 1 3/4 ID pipe. Had to hit the expanded end with a hammer to get it ovaled. Slipped it on right where the two pipes come together and then I could move it around till I got the mufflers where I wanted them and then bolted it all up and tacked a few welds to hold it in place. then Removed the exhaust and finished welding. then painted grill paint on headers and Wha la they look pretty good. I used the mufflers off the road king. the big turing bike ones and rubber mounted them to the Saddle bags bottom bracket. There super quiet unless you get on them then you can hear them crack. Other wise I can now hear my radio instead of the old exhaust rattling.
I'll try to get some pics tommorow.
