making pretty again

Ok guys,
not being a m/c mechanic but an ex cage repairman I really don't know much how these bikes run but I love this bike. I have got everything running very smoothly for the time being and everything seems to be purring just right. Now to make her look a little better without screwing something else up. On either side of the engine are what used to be some real pretty covers ( I think). Both say Yamaha and both appear to have once been polished alluminum. Are these actually covers or if I remove them will I have bright shiny new oil all over the shop floor?

Those are indeed just covers, the only problem you would run into is taking the right side cover off (sitting on bike) is that your generator is on that side and parts are bolted via allenhead bolts to the cover - just takes a few extra minutes to get on and off.
