I have a problem with my engine losing power when you first start off like its running on 2 cylinders but after the RPM gets to 2500 it takes off. Here is what I have done to correct the problem:

1.I have had the carbs sinked
2.I have had the wire on my points replaced because of brakage
    3. Changed Fuel
    4. Changed Plugs

Not sure what else to do?
Do you think there might be a pin hole in one of the sides?

    Please can some one help?

      Hi,

Couple of dumb questions from me but here goes, Have you cleaned the carbs especially the pilot circuits? If there is any dirt, crud, varnish or old gas residue it will never run well in the low range.
Have you cleaned, replaced or properly gapped the spark plugs?

Have you tested the ignition coils as per the manual.

And last but not least have you checked and cleaned all the connections for the TCI and ignition coils and have you freshened up the high tension lead connections at the plug caps?

All simple stuff but can create havoc with the way you bike runs.

      Cheers,

        motor trouble

Cleaned carbs before I had them sinked. Not sure of coils Replaced the plugs with new ones, seemed to help a little. Checked the wires at the the TCI and replaced one of them. I took the spark plug caps off and re-set them back on again

Spritz the pipes with water and you can tell which ones are hot... and not.

Not sure if you mean 3 and 4, or 3 or 4.
As you may know carbs 1 and 2 are fed from one pet cock and carbs 3 and 4 are fed from the other. one ignition coil feeds cylinders 1 and 4 and the other feeds 2 and 3.

That might help you narrow the problem to fuel or ignition related.

We need the year and model of the bike! If it's a '78 through '81, it is PROBABLY the pick-up coil wires. I've found the front coil to be the usual problem. Do a search from the MAIN forum page to see the "fix".

Hey, Ray, that's a great way to narrow it down! How come I never thought of that?

Get a spray bottle and hit the pipes at idle. Sounds like a plugged pilot circuit in one o' the carbs. Whoever doesn't sizzle like the rest of the pipes has the bad carb.

i put my hands on the pipes to see which warms first

                        and which stays cold,

so i know way before it even gets hot enough, and able to shut the motor and start looking,

my last problem was (3 times)paper element fuel filters that clog
when it dries, as the fuel in the lines drain and when i first start the motor would starve out the carbs, since it is now parked on the side stand, #4 and #3 (carbs) got it worse.

now i use wire mesh and the prob has gone away

This might be the problem. I Never knew mine had this setup.

Now, now, you know what he meant by 'points'. The one thing that I would say, is that for the pickup coil wires and the carbs, don't rule them out just because you had a go at them once. Some folks end up cleaning carbs as many as three times.

Many of us WISH we only had to go into the carbs three times. I'm on my 10,000th carb removal or something. At least it seems that way.
