    Advice Needed..My First XS1100 LG

I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1980 Midnight Special. The price was right ..free. Of course it is in need of some TLC in which I am not a stranger to. I have a couple of early 70 Honda`s I have restored and this is my first Yamaha.
Any Direction as what to look for first would be helpful. In my eyes the bike is in pretty good shape compared to what I am used to. Anyways here is my questions.

    1. If you are sitting on the bike there is a wire that comes out from the bottom of the left side crankcase area which looks as if it goes somewhere into the battery area. I can not find the mating plug anywhere. It is a white 8 prong male plug with 6 spade connectors inside. Can anyone enlighten me as to where this goes? My local Yamaha shop thinks it is to the rectifier or possibly the CDI.

    2. Could this missing item be the reason I get no headlight , tailight or starter power? The starter does work by jumping the solenoid and the light works with direct power the the buld connector.

I appreciate any direction in this matter.

    Whodda,

Congrats on the great deal on a great bike. Same model as mine so I'm kinda partial. Sounds like the wire is from the pick-up coils. If my memory serves me right....It runs from the left side case, underneath the bike, up through the right side, behind the fuse panel, up to the CDI unit mounted on the rear fender under the seat. Your headlight won't come on if the engine doesn't crank. I'm pretty sure the taillight comes on with the key. I don't know about the starter. There are several more "electrically charged" minds on the list who will probably jump in to give you a hand.

Good luck on getting your black beauty on the road.

Thank you for the direction. The CDI is present and attached to the rear fender as described. I will look more closely for a plug in that area. I did not look too closely in that area before.
I guess it is possible the starter solenoid is shot. I have not tested it yet so it is likely to be the problem.

Agian Thank you for the direction.

I think this is the wire to the emergency shut-off. It's purpose is to stop the engine if the bike tilts more than 60%. Should be a place in the wiring harness for the plug.

there really is a 'tilt' shutoff on the xs it is located under the fuel tank area at least it is on my 78'E I am not sure of the exact location on the XJ but it should be in about the same area

I didn`t really think I was being tricked. Actually sounds like a pretty good device to have..unless your a really good knee dragger

I guess my best bet is to aquire a manual and study it over.

              Thanks for the Info

If you're looking for good information and break downs for your bike I would recommend that you consider getting a CD that is offered by XSive Rob Mills. I got one and was very pleased. I'll try to put a link in that will take you to where you can learn more about it. Good luck with the project and prepare to fall in loveโ€ฆthe XS1100 has that affect on people. XS1100 CD ROM Link

Thank you for the link...I had actually stumbled across that site at work.......er I mean.. and lost it. It seems like a reasonable price for the information offered.

                  Thanks Agian...

Oh yea..I fell in love with the XS just looking at it parked in my driveway.....A thing of beauty

Congrats on the great deal on your midnight. As an owner of a 81LH the first thing I can tell you is good luck if you are looking for cosmetic parts in gold tint. All seem to be long gone. I found my little beauty in pieces and still couldnt resist her charm and beauty. As for Tech Help... I will take a back seat and let those more experienced take over and guide you. Most do know what they are talking about.

Every girl I've dated upon seeing BB for the first time have all commented that it's big and ugly. Personaly I think they look great, hell I even like the square headlight on my standard. <G>

Well..I did find that mating plug after all. It was on the opposite side of the fuse box plate. Thanks to all whom pointed me in that direction. Now I need to get a new battery as the current one is very tired I`ll keep you posted on my progress.

I`m sure you`ll be seeing me ask more questions knowledge is bliss
