  • Oil seal install question

OK, I may have screwed up again.
I was replacing the oil seal on the right-hand end of the crankshaft. You have to take the alternator cover and rotor off to get at the seal.

I removed the old seal, put the new one in place, seated it by placing a socket on the seal (27mm?) and gently tapping the seal as far in as it would go.

However, after I had done this it seems to me the seal was in farther than the one I had removed, which was flush with the case castings.

Did I put the seal in to far? If so, what might be the ramifications? I am guessing there is supposed to be some space between the seal and the bearing to allow for oil circulation around the bearing. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, I will get another new seal and replace the one I just put in, but will only install it flush with the case.

    Jerry,
That seal should be flush. I don't think you will hurt anything with running it, as the outside of the seal will be against the outer race of the bearing. There should be plenty of room for the oil to drain back out, just a little slower than normal.
    Happy birthday, buy the way!
