Well I will check the height of the floats. I am going to do that Saturday. I just put new seats and floats in about a month ago. I cleaned them then too. Maybe I screwed the height up then. I was getting about 30mpg then when I pulled them to clean them again it changed to about 18. Thanks again for the advice.

That may answer a lot. Your pod filters COULD be the problem. Here's what I was talking about...

I believe this is the filters you got.. the type that the element kind of snaps on to the rubber boot...

If you take off the filter element, this is basically what you have. Notice the air jets on the carbs next to the center one that has the boot. Now look at all the air jets this boot is covering up when installed...

Here's a filter comparison of what you should be looking for. Look at the inside dimensions of the two filters. The cheap one on the left has a 54mm bell (For the XJ) then narrows down to accept the filter. The better filter is 54mm through the whole boot.

I'm not telling you to get the oval filters... just look for one that has a better fit for our carbs.

Those are exactly the filters I have and they have caused me many problems. The last time I messed with them I tried very hard to put them on just far enough for the band to hold them on. The bike is running pretty well at the moment so I guess I managed to get them on there just right. I plan on buying a new set from Mike's just to eliminate this restriction.

I dont have the indy filters but, looking at the pictures, would it be possible to just trim the rubber where it covers the vents/jets?

I thought about that, but that extra lip is formed with a groove that holds the filter element to the boot. If you remove material from the boot you will loose the mounting surface for the element.

Perhaps is there were some small portions carefully drilled or carved from precise points in the boot it could improve the air flow, but I think I would still be worried about the filter falling off. Maybe at that point an adhesive of some sort would be the answer.

Bummer! I can definitely see how these filter mounts could cause the engine to run very differently by blocking the air flow to the vents and jets! BTW Your profile says 80 special but the pictures are 81 carbs. Well, at least the bowl covers are 81. Did you switch at some point?

Those aren't my carbs. The pictures were posted by trbig, I was just chiming in to say that I have the same pods he is showing in his pics and know about the problems they cause.

TC designed some velocity stacks and made these filters work, but to me, it seemed like a lot of work when another $20 ($60 total) can get you a good set. You may look and see for yourself.

Look at his last post on the page.

                      Still Confused

Well I adjusted my floats to what the manual calls for and it appears that the mileage is only increased by a few miles. When I take off I get a gas odor from the exhaust but seems to go away once I get going. ( I was being followed and thats what the person behind me said.) I dont know what else to try. My breaks are not hanging, the clutch aint slipping, and my plugs dont look bad either. I must be missing something. Any more ideas?
