  • Oil Light at high R's

    XS/XJ experts or not:

I have recently put this bike together from scratch and everything seems to work great! Except I am getting an oil light warning when I run it to 8 or so through the gears to about 100+. The light goes off after coming down on R's but curious if this is normal or should I be fixing something?

I have went through nearly everything other than tearing down engine. Oil levels are perfect and it runs great! I am also a little curious if the 2-4 R's are always a little weak on power? I am very impressed with 4-8 R's and couldn't ask for more.

I am also looking for rear signal mounts? I have created my own but would love to get it back to original.

    Thank you for any imput,

    Chad

I think the warning light is from the oil level gauge. Sure you have enough oil in it? I had mine come on only once and it was low. Don't ask me how that happened....
I fill mine to the top line on the window.
All signal parts are still available from Yam but if your looking for a complete assm. than ebay. A complete set, front and back just sold for $25, that's not the usual though.

      Thanks for the reply,

I filled the oil at oil change to recomended levell, which was 3.75 or something close. I checked the window which was about 5/8 covered. Should I fill it to the full? I tried to be anal but maybe completely full would be better. It appears that it is taking all the oil and then it shows the oil light. When I let off a little it goes away.

I didn't know if this was common on these bikes or not? When I say I ran it hard through the gears, I wasn't kidding. I talking 8+ grand in 1,2,3, and by then I am doing 90 plus++++ The bike can roll........ When I get between 4-8 it pulls hard but I don't want to damage it.

      Thanks,

      Chad

There are two lines in the window and the level is suppose to be ok anywhere between the two. I have found that if it is close to the lower line the light will come on for low oil level and so I fill mine to the top line which is almost to the top of the window. Make sure you do this check on the center stand............
When it pulls hard you are getting a taste of what we all feel and why we love these bikes. Just let it roll and hang on tight!!!!

It could be possible that all the oil is being pushed up in the top of the engine and not having the chance to make it back to the sump when you push hard.

Dragsters and high performance bracket cars have trouble like that. The high sustained revving pushes all the oil to the top of the engine and doesn't make it back down by the time the race is over. They either use a dry sump or an oil accumulator to keep pressure until the oil gets back down to the pump.

If the oil pressure stays up when you approach the same revs, but accelerate more slowly, I would say this is your problem. First thing to do would be to pull the valve cover and make sure your return passages are not plugged up with old bits of gasket material, silicone, or sludge.

mY xj1100 ALWAYS HAS THE OIL LIGHT ON until I go about 5 miles or so, warming up I think. Also fill to the top line. When level drops to half window oil light will come on at high RPM's. I use 20W-50 Weight oil.

Have you added any 'oil additives'? For instance, Lucas Oil Stabilizer causes oil foaming that can set off the light. One thing you might consider is running (at idle only) some sea foam in the case for a few minutes before changing the oil.
