  • New (to me) xs11

    Hi to all,
First, what a great site! Friendly people with much experience and knowlege. This site will be a regular stop for me from now on.

I became an xs11 owner about ten days ago and wanted to say hi to all. I also wanted to show a couple pix of my xs11 and see what you folks think about her.

I bought my 1981 Midnight Special from the second owner and he bought the bike in 1983. It had a tick under 13,000 miles and overall looked to be fairly well cared for. Although she rode well on my test ride, from what I could see the bike still needed at least new fork seals, front brake pads and carb intake boots.
The left side plastic body cover is badly cracked and will most likely need to be replaced.

I paid $1,650 for the bike and although it is early in the game I feel the price was OK.

So take a look and let me know what you all think about her.

Welcome to the addiction. Nice looking rig. Any problems you have with the bike can be fixed here. You may find you do not need new carb boots 'cause most of the cracking is cosmetic. The fork seal of choice here are OEM Yamaha ones. Fork seals are very easy to install after making the "tool" needed to hold the inner fork tube. I would venture to say that most people here, including myself, are partial to EBC pads. There are tons of tech tips available here to help you along.

My 80g was a Bobby J Yamaha purchase. I scored it about 20 some years ago from the orginial buyer and this site has been a great resource of help.

I lived in Abq. for 30 years before moving to Texass in '04. Still trying to find the mountains.

"Course on the flip side, it could give you many problems and cause tons of grief. I will be in Abq to week of 18th and would be happy to haul it off before it drives you nuts.
    When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

      Nice MNS

side plastic body cover is badly cracked
MNS side covers be the hardest to find.
Until you find a "new" one can epoxy the back side.
Your exhaust is looking pretty good too, which is another hard to find item.

Looks like a steal to me! I used a 2 part epoxy made by Permatex on some fairings the other day. Works great, very strong. I think it would be the best way to go on your side cover.

Oh man, that brought back some memories.
I remember being 15 and hanging around at Bobby J's. I finally got me that 1971 125MX.

          Good times in 'burque.

              Thanks for the Responses!

I have already put the new fork seals and brake pads in. Also ran nearly a quart of brake fluid through the system before the old dark brown stuff was gone. Many thanks also for the tips on carb boots and the side covers. Happy motoring to all!

Xcess11 - Nice looking ride. 10 coats or so of plastidip spray on your carb boots will return them to like new condition. Just rough them up good and clean them, mask the openings and apply coats about 30 minutes apart. You have to do all the coats 30 minutes apart, so you want to do it on a day when you've got 5 hours free. If you let it sit overnight and try to apply more, it will bubble and the finish will be a little rough. Still looks good though, but if you want a nice smooth finish, do 'em all at once.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
