Hey Bill,
So....you're running the MONO SHOCK on the left side of the swingarm on your bike, with NO shock on the right??
There has been some debate about whether the swingarm on the XS11 flexes at the axle location or not!? Denny has stated that he's been able to cause the wheel to deflect a fair amount. The right side of the swingarm isn't anywherenear as beefy as the left side, so I'd be a bit concerned with handling IF you're relying on just 1 shock with our 25+ y/o design!?
Would like to see some photos of your setup!

TC, if you click the attached pic, it will take you to his photodump page with more pictures of his setup. From the pictures, the shock is mounted on the right-side.
snowdog, did you have to modify the lower shock mount? when mocking up the R1 shock on my '79F, the distance between the mount tabs needed to be widened slightly. This closed the distance between the shock eyelet and the swingarm. making it impossible to line up the mount hole and shock eyelet. It appears the the lower mount tabs MUST be refabed.

put r1 in surface grinder remove 3/16 inch
make new nylon bushing for bottom shock eye . look how big the axel [the heat treated axel is] look how is supported by the final drive the how the axel clamps in the swing arm then consider that swing arm is free to flex with twinshocks they arn't going to prevent any flexing.
but the best proof is when you drive it and
scream oh my god this great i also put fj1100 front fork on except for 1 small spacer that my brother big al made it's total bolt on. now my xs1100 is just like fj110 but with shaft drive.

R1 monoshock
I weigh 215 Lbs and my bike was naked at the time (no bags/fairing). I put many hard miles on it with the XS750 FD installed too before I converted to chain drive. I even got airborn a few times over some railroad tracks near my home and that is a solid set-up being on the RIGHT side. If you really wanted to beef up the rear with the R1 shock, spend about 30-40 bucks for some DOM steel and weld it to underbrace the swingarm....you will still have a better ride than any expensive shock set you can dish out for, period! That shock has 3-way damping, rebound, preload and you can get them dirt cheap, since the crotch rocket guys spend their entire paycheck on Ohlins or whatever just to look cool, and dump the R1 shock for pennies on Ebay.....chopLast edited by xschop; 08-08-2008, 11:47 AM.MDRNF
