Well, just took my carbs apart to see why the floats were sticking and the problem became immediately apparent. I've had the bowls off I-don't-know-how-many times. But being the scrooge I am, as long as the gaskets looked like they would seal, I reused them. Each time I reassembled them they got a little thinner and a little wider, until they were finally wide enough to catch and hold the float! That's the last time I try to save $12 recycling float bowl gaskets. Unless of course they look like they'll still seal...

Craz - I don't know - they were getting bible-page-thin I probably would have tried just what you suggested, but this time they came out in pieces.

You can use layers of electrical tape to build the thickness back up.

Spray both sides with gasket spray, several layers, they get thicker!

Or there's good cardboard to be found in cereal boxes. That and a sharp knife, you got free gaskets for life!

OHHHH thats good! Post or Kellogs? you could also do the same thing with a innertube, from the neighbor's bike of course.

Fred - does the graphic side of the box go up or down? Man, I thought I was cheap, but you guys are raising it to an art form! I love it.

I dont know about the cerial box thing but I'm partial to frosted Flakes and there is just something about cutting Tony up.

Just make them from gasket material. The old ones get rather brittle after several years and then make a very nice template. $3.00 gets you about 30 bowl gaskets.

Perhaps you are tightning them too much, just snug and 1/4 more seals them well. I had to take mine off 14 times. I coated them with vasoline when they were new in order to prevent them from sticking. (PAM can also be used) They never leaked there, just the float sticking out through the plenum.

Boyat - You're probably right. I do tend to get them pretty tight. Matter of fact, the last time I had 'em apart I could feel one bolt trying to strip. Anyway when I went to reassemble them this time, that bolt hole was all the way gone. I cleaned it and took some JB Quick Weld and coated the inside of the hole good. Turned a drill bit through it with my hand and then ran a tap through it. It's working pretty good for now, but I'll probably have to redo it next time I have the carbs apart. Hopefully that won't be for a good long while.
