Mr. Clymer says every 6 months/2500 miles to sync carbs and every 8000 miles to dismantle and clean carbs.

I sync everytime I take them off or do anything with them.

Never synced them on my first xs, but then I didn't know how good they run when they are synced.

is the running lean / backfire on decel any real harm?

me think one of the flaps is bit low on idle

Greg - I always get a back-rap on hard deceleration. Shouldn't be a problem. I've even heard tell that that's the way they're supposed to run. Lean? Depends on how lean. On an automobile engine it can burn the valves if it's too lean, but I don't know if that applies to XS's.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I get lots of popping on decel. Believe its normal. Look at the race cars with the open exhaust, flames on decel. I think the more restrictive exhaust on cars, etc., hides the fact that exhaust gases are still burning after they leave the motor. I'm no expert though.

hard decel or not, little bit of popping

if no real biggy on valves, can I take 1500 mi ride on it?

I had that problem-back off your screws by 1/4 turn- that cured my popping

                thx

altogether I'd better snap the gauges on huh

spend fifteen off of it & at it

was just curious to know about the consequences

I would try turning the screws out a hair.I don't think it would hurt.
