  • need Carbs/Calipers please

    Hello all,

The carbs on my 78 XS11 is leaking gas like a siv with the engine running or not. I would rather not go through the exersize of overhauling them myself. Where can I either send them for repair or do a swap out? Also my front calipers are sticking and would like to swap those out as well.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated....Phil

    calipers

Just to let you know that the problems with the calipers is a common problem with the XS or at least that is what I was told. I have found that it very easy to rebuild the calipers my self you can get the kits for about $15.00 from partsandmore.com. as for the carbs I can not help you with that one. You might also want to check the master cylinders they also are known for the return hole to plug if I remember there is a list on that on the old forum someone else might be able to help you find that one.

      PJSALERNO,

New XS replacement parts, particularly carb sets and calipers, are far and few. It is going to be difficult to own an XS and have it run like it can, without picking up a wrench and getting dirty.

The next best thing is to find a bike mechanic you know and trust (that likes working on old bikes with no replacement parts) and stick with him. It is going to cost you.

Doing your own wrenching is not that bad. There are some areas on the XS that will drive you nuts, but this list can walk you through just about anything. Once these bike have all their problems worked out, they will give you tens of thousands of miles of riding pleasure.

In your case, it sounds like you have some petcock, fuel float, and brake spooge problems. All three are very common to the XS and are well supported on this list.

Read through the other sections of this site and ask for help as you go. You will be amazed at the response.

Rob at www.motorcyclecarbs.com can remanufacture them for you, but it will cost....Rob offers a premium product, I have seen his stuff and it is nice. Maybe a local XSive lives close by and would be willing to help you.

          carb work

You can also send them to Merriam Cycle http://www.merriamcycles.com/html/begin.html
They do nice work. I screwed around with mine until I was ready to bounce em off the wall. Sent em to Merriam and they came back working great. Still have to sync them of course.
