  • She lives!

Well, after finding the engine on my bike to have a spun bearing, some bent valves and a funny smell, I found another bike, an 80 model, and swapped the engine. Tonight it fired. actually ran for a while too. Won't idle except at full enrichment, and I am sure the timing is way off, but I am stoked anyway.

Now I need to think of a name for it....

Congrats on getting a working and salvageable engine. Sounds like you need to work on the carbs next!

For some inspiration, take a look at this thread in the member's lounge about bike nicknames.

      Ivan:

As TC said, you need to doctor your carbs. One thing to point out is the 80 models had a fixed special bolt on the timing plate that the head was wrung off when it was installed. This was so that the owner could not change the fixed timing setup. Your timing may be perfectly fine and all you need to do is medicate your carbs .

I took the timing reluctor from the 81 and put it on the 80 engine. The 80 engine had fly weights and the 80 did not. From what I understand the ignition module handles rev based advance on the 81s.

I bet she needs timing, and definitely carb work.

Do the carbs first before messing with the timing. If it will only idle on the enrichener, then that means that you definitly have a plugged pilot (idle) circuit and it must be cleaned. A thorough disassembly and cleaning will do more for it than messing with the timing. Do a search for carb cleaning, and you will find everything you need to know to do the job correctly.

I was actually able to get it running better to night. I found that two of my carb holders are leaking. I have two other sets, so it will be mix and match. If not I am sure I can rig something up with some plasti dip or liquid electrical tape. I am sure this will help.

Also I am not getting any vacuum advance. I have the hose hooked to the port on the #2 carb. Is this correct or should it go on the carb holder and the vacuum fuel valve on the carb? It may be possible that the hole in the carb is plugged as well.

the vac advance hose connects 2 the no2 carb ur rite there.
to check if that is blocked run the engine, itll suck in air
              and run like crap,
to check ur vac advance, stick that hose in ur mouth suck on it
and hold ur tongue over the hose, the vac advance shouldnt drop
and hold pressure, it can be hard 2 c the vac adv unit move when the bike isnt under load.
              hope it helps.
