  • More bad luck

Well, I bought this bike with the intention of doing a little fix up work.

Found the timing chain jumped needs a couple valves. No big deal.

While fiddling around tonight, I was looking down the timing chain opening through the cylinder block to the crank case. In there I saw the crank bearing to the left side of the cam gear out of place and all galled up. I bumped the starter and found that one half of the shell has slid under the other half and they are spinning round with the crank.

I am afraid of what to look for next. If I pull the pan I might find the crank wasted, rods shot and all sorts of things.

Not to mention that I have yet to find an engine bearing set for sale.

Not real pleased with the PO, who said it was running, but indicated it needed some tune up work.

    Sorry to vent.

Sorry to hear it. Do you have an xs or xj? The guru's here can help but it sounds like you have quite a bit of work ahead of you.

Its an XS1100SH, 81 model. First three of the vin are 4R0.

I looked at the parts fiche and it has color coded bearings, I imagine for undersized applications.

Anyone know how to decypher this?

      Thanks.

        Hi Ivan,

Easier to look for a replacement motor; look out for Andreas on the site; he breaks these bikes, and should be able to help!

there is a 79 motor on ebay for $99. I imagine the shipping would be pretty steep. I think it was in california.

Yep I think you be needing a new engine. At least the bottom end but if you got bent valves too. Maybe somebody either ran that one low one oil or more likely ran it with lots of gas in the oil.

Well, judging by the cylinder walls, I would guess it was gas in the oil.

My case is fubared. I could probably find someone to weld it back up and convince my boss at work that I really need the horizontal CNC mill for reboring the hole, but I have seen too many used engines that are more worth it than the trouble of repairing the case.

I have found another bike here in town, I think it is an 80 model. Has a junk engine as well as one that has supposedly been rebuilt. Not sure how many more parts I will get, but it is a basket case, and doesn't come with a seat. Maybe there will be enough parts there to cobble together a bike. If the allegedly rebuilt engine runs, I will be test driving by Sunday. if not, I will be really torked off by then. :P

And thus it begins, having the 1st XS11, and then acquiring a second one to repair first, then a 3rd engine, etc.!!

Hey, I've got a name for your machine...and you!

                  Ivan the Terrible!

The engines are pretty much swappable, but the 81 uses a different ignition unit...the TCI(4RO series), and doesn't have a mech. cent. adv. uhit on the timing system, just the mech. vacu. adv. and so you'll need to swap the timing parts from the dead 81 engine onto whatever engine you put into the 81 frame to be able to continued to use the 81's TCI with the built in Programmed Cent. Adv. curves.

However, if you find that the 81's TCI is bad, or later takes a crap, then you'll want to keep the older mech. parts and the older 2H7 series TCI, and you can then convert the 81 to work with the older and easier to repair/find TCI's!!

                  Good Luck! T.C.

Yeah. They joys of hot rodding and classic vehicles. I haven't had this much funstration since my '78 Fiat X 1/9.

At least when I get one going I will have some extra stuff and be able to share the parts love here.

BTW, this is turning out to be a darn good forum. I like the attitude and the helpfulness here.

                          Andreas,
                          Thanks for the offer.

I am going to look at the local bike this morning. If it doesn't pan out, I will be getting in contact with you soon enough.

                          Thanks,
                          Ivan

                            The saga continues...

Got the other bike, a 1980 SG, and the engine has compression, and the cams are in time! Yay.

The 1980 model engine is probably seven hundred pounds heavier than the 81, my SWMBO thinks it was because I pulled that engine in the sun when it was 110ยบ, as opposed to the 81 engine being pulled in the cool morning breeze. I don't think she knows much about motorcycles.

My hopes are heightened, I have parts from at least four other bikes. Maybe something will rumble soon other than the old man.
