  • Uncapped hole in carb

OK, now that I boiled the carb and discovered all the wonders of a high carb "diet" I noticed that on my #4, on the street side, there is a fairly large circular hole that appears to feed air into a vent. It has a cap on it.

Each of the other carbs also has this hole, but they are uncapped. Can't find any info on any caps for this carb. So, is it supposed to be on there, or not?

T/C sent me a terminology dictionary that clarified just about all the other "thingys". . .then I go and find another.

    Let me know!

    Hey Cam,

The right side of carb bodies #4 and #2 will have that tunnel that is capped/sealed off, same for left side of #1....possibly hidden by the choke lever assembly, and also #3. Just depends on which carb body is going to become which carb is whether they drill those channels all the way thru to be used for the fuel inlets...down low, or the bowl vents....up high like what is inbetween the carbs 1-2 and 3-4.

      Hi Cam,
what fluid did you boil your carbs in?
Soapy water is fine but if you let them soak in propriatory carb cleaners you may well have fritzed up the butterfly shaft seals and those are a right swine to replace.

        Boiling and caps

Hey, ya. I boiled them in soapy water, then cleaned (again), still can't remove the brass. As to the caps, I gather that if they are not used for the T-fitting (gas) they should be capped? There are no caps floating in the water. . .so they were not capped. How would this affect the fuel delivery?

I am taking it today to be drilled out and ordering replacements. There was a point broken off in the #1 (which has been firing) that the PO tried to remove. I will get the pointy-thingy gauge and try to remove it, but it looks like it has been gouged and is still there. Should I try to replace the individual carb since this hole is obviously going to end up larger.

I hope to get this bike back together by Christmas

I'm not sure if I follow 100%. The holes, are they in the same place where the fuel tees go except on the opposite side?

I have marked the holes between 1 and 2, 3 and 4, where the fuel tees and vent tees live. (picture generously donated by XS11SF)

If the opposite side on the same carb is open then it might be that someone has tried to replace a no.2 crb with a no. 3 carb, for example.

With respect to the pointy thingy check this tech tip...http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...=&threadid=138

I just had a look at the fische for the carbs, it looks like the standards had plugs on the outsides of 1 and 4 and the specials didn't.

There are a few plugs on these bikes just to cover things to make it look nicer, like the tiny plugs they put in the top of the middle/final drive fill plugs.

I believe they are just for decoration and the recess in the carb should not go through.

Is the cap the one in the photo below....I don't have any on my '79 but that doesn't mean it didn't come with them. I'm sure they are just there for looks as the fische only mentions them for carbs 1 and 4, being the only sides that can be seen.
