carbs on these are a pain, prone to issues, even when they sit just for a few weeks, are hard to get in and out, so if you own one of these,
it is your obligation to learn them and it is an xsive
"rites of passage"
to resurect these carbs yourself, the lesson learned will come in handy on road trips when the vacume hose pops out and starves 2 carbs, fouling the plugs, clogged filters, mazes of fuel lines in cramp spaces, plugged up gas tanks vents, etc.
to me the xs1100 is the carbs, everything on the bike else takes care of itself, with out the fussy routine mainantance
not hyper regular attention or worry like the carbs.

They sure can be if you have a rusty tank and/or old fuel lines.
Learned about the BS34 III's on my G. Once I got all the "issuses" sorted ran just over 10,000 miles w/o a carb problem. Have put over 10,000 miles on one of my SH's (daily ride) and have yet to have a carb problem
A set of mikuni smooth bore would have cost the same and a little more for flat slides.
First thing is get some inline filters. If your gonna let it sit with out cranking for more than 1 week keep a fuel stabilizer in the gas. I run marvel mystery oil regularly. Keeps everything nice and clean and conditions seals and seats. And no chance of gas going bad any time soon. I also crank it and let it warm up every 2-3 days. If you know its gonna sit even a week or 2 drain the bowls. There meant to run, not sit around.
But once there adjusted right and ran on a regular basis, they should be reletivly trouble free.
When they sit the gas evaporates from the carbs drying out the seals, leaving deposits, and gum. All it takes is to dry out a couple times and sudden little things pop up. Needles stick or don't fully seat, floats don't move as freely, rough idle, carbs spit back, and all making them seem nightmarish.
Its absolutely worth it to take one of these guys offers to help teach you these carbs.
If you can get it to the Anaheim area I would be more than happy to do all the maintenance/repairs you might need. There is a Yamaha dealer near me that carries all the parts still available for these machines and some that aren't available anymore. Over the years I have acquired a rather long list of spare parts myself. Carb rebuilds are more in the $100 range.

And I thought I felt bad about charging a guy 350 for the work I done on his XS850.
1. Rebuilt carbs and sync
2. Replaced rear turn signals and got them working
3. Replaced the starter button
4. Fixed his seat lock
5. Replaced front tire and balance
6. Fixed his fuel petcocks
7. Changed all the oils
8. Polished his chrome
I feel better about what I charged, even tho I feel shorted now.
