  • Coils, coils, coils

Bit of a newbie here, but own an 81 XS1100rh (the Aussie Sport).

I had poor performance at higher revs but out of gear it would rev pretty freely.

The bike is bog standard - airbox, pipes and carbs.

I changed the Octy for normal fuel pipe, i tested the compression etc etc.

I was VERY close to ripping out the carbs (because everything you read says that they are the root of all evil).

Taking a step back, it occurred to me though that it was obvious that 30 yr old HT leads and coils probably weren't going to be 100% anymore.

I ordered a pair of Dynas and a new set of leads. I used the instructions for brackets that AlanB has on the UK site and my first ride out on them was when I realised what an XS1100 is all about.

I liked the bike before the new coils, but with the new coils on I was in awe of the bikes pulling power. I couldn't believe that I thought the old way of running was close to good - it was NOTHING compared to the new performance.

I read dozens of posts on here about people ripping apart carbs and rejetting etc. It is a crazy move if you are relying on 30 yr old coils and HT leads for your final ignition.

Everybody who can afford $120 should do themselves a favour and ditch those old coils and HT leads before they do anything else. Feedback says that there is no better way to improve the performance of your bike and it should be done long before you start ripping carbs apart.

    Hey Melbxs,

I agree, but folks don't even need to spend $120, they can spend about 1/2 as much...MikesXS High Output Coil Upgrade Mod !

Last time I checked, MikesXS also has a site in EURO/Germany!

      Thanks TopCat!

So there you go - when you get the bike, change all the fluids and the coils, leads and plugs. Then worry about other things if there's still a problem.

For the past few weeks I had been loosing power at high RPM and the bike was running quite rich. After reading thread after thread about the reliability (or lack thereof) of 30 year old coils I looked there before screwing around with the carbs. All I did was spend two minutes cleaning the butt connectors on the leads to the coils, the mix leaned out and I found the top-end power that I knew the bike had! I figure if i can get that much improvement from cleaning a couple of connections, a new set of coils and wires is a no-brainer. I'm going to pick up a set from Mike's as soon as possible.

A good set of high volt coils and leads to match add absolutely nothing in terms of power. BUT, what they do is unlock it all and move it right up to your right grip for use any time you want it. Same reason nitro racers use two magnetos.

The inductive ignition with electronic triggering that is on the 11's has the capability to produce a nice long lasting fat spark that is just perfect to completely light off all the fuel/air. A better burn in the comustion chamber unlocks more power so a set of fresh coils and low impedance plug wires takes the full advantage of this.

I have been running Dyna coils and Accel 8.8 mm wires for a few years. They are a great 'bang for the buck' in terms of performance you can feel.

Copper high tension lead wire in 7 or 8mm

looks like it might be gettin' hard to come by. I stopped into a speed shop in Temecula today and asked to buy some and the counterman looked at me like I was a flippin' idiot !!

He contends he hasn't seen any of that for ages .... wasn't even sure if he could order it. I just ordered a set of MikesXS coils a few days back and thought I'd be able to walk in to any parts store and get a length of bulk wire. Wassup with this?

Accel makes a universal stainless steel 8.8 mm non-resister wire kit for 4 cyl. bikes. Dennis Kirk has them. Part # 20-637. Probably about $45.00 for the set.

                  Thx, TAD ...

Them new coils would be lookin' pretty stupid on there with no wires, eh? I'll check in with DK .... Do you know if these 8.8mm will stuff into the coils?

                    Hey Wiz,

The 8mm I put in was a tight fit even with WD-40 spritzed on the ends before inserting! You might end up having to trim some off the very ends that stick into the coils to get them to fit?

Did you not see the wires on MikesXS when you ordered your coils??

Check Ebay, I found some nice colored ones for about $20.00 IIRC, solid core, etc.!

I knew you had gotten some cool wires for Godzilla ...

Thx, TC I suspected that ... most of this older stuff is meant for 7mm.... I've found a spool of 8mm solid core (see my timing thread post) but haven't ordered it yet. will check Fleabay for giggles .... although I have to confess Fleabay gives me an attitude .... a BAD one. Hate the place.
