  • special rear wheel on a standard

I've had 3 xs before this one, all had the 16 rear wheel. now that hte 1100 chop is almost complete (just needs paint) I wanted to go with a red back wheel with whitewall tire. Saw a deal today and got a nice wall for 30 bucks in a regular mt90. But didnt think enough to double check mysize to notice this one has a 17 rim. Now i've researched on here and see hte difference.
I see that somebody said if all the parts are on the extra rim, it's a direct bolt on?? Do you guys mind glancing at this ebay wheel and letting me know if everything is there that I need for a direct bolt on. I figure i havnt loss anything, saved big on the tire, another 40 and I can get another rim so I can have it all painted and ready so theres no downtime when i go to switch ya know. Let me know if this rim is what I need and if i'm all set for a simple bolt on. I figure i'll be even better cause right now with the chop (5 links off xs750 springs came to 3/4 inch off rear tire, stiff, but looks better then just straight fender struts, plus a little bit of give over a locked strut ya know, so i figure the extra half inch of riim gained with the 1 inch smaller rim, i can probobly use the harley 11 inch shocks instead of my cut ones for a little more softness.

thanks for saving me time gents.

    LostSoul,

There is no problem swapping a 16" rim for a 17" but you will need the dust seal and spacer for the rim you are installing. The dust seal and spacers are different for a 16" and a 17" rim. As long as you have the correct dust seal and spacer it's a direct bolt on swap!

    Cheers,

      Hi Guys,

I have swapped both ways, and found I needed the "torque plate" which stops the caliper and bracket from turning as well..... they are slightly different, although a spot of bending would probably sort it out!

I have a 17" wheel on the way as well. For gas mileage.
Where can we find dust seal and spacers for the 17?

Edit: and I believe its standard wheel going on to a special

            Hi Dave,

You might want to do some measuring before swapping in the 17" wheel; there is not a lot of difference in overall diameter between the 16" and 17" wheels when fitted with the recommended tires........

Some of the 16" tires I have here are a bigger outside diameter than some of the 17s........ All depends on the tire brand.

To step the gearing up, the big change comes from swapping in the rear bevel from the XS750/850 range.

Try a search for both those subjects; there has been a ton written on both.

              Hey Dave and Lost Soul,

You guys may have just solved your own problems, just contact each other and arrange to swap out the dust covers and spacers for your OEM rims to each other, Lost will get the 16" one and Dave will get the 17" ones!

That would have worked. But I'd like to be able to easily swap back if I don't like the 17.
There could be an issue under my rear fender with a larger diameter tire/wheel. But I won't know untill I put it on and bounce up and down on it to see if it rubs frame and wires.
So I might not even be able to use it. I'll just refinish it back to new and put it back on ebay if I don't.
