Vetter Head light question

I have a Vetter, Windjammer fairing. I was trying to remove the head light ring but it doesn't budge. Am I doing it right, depress the spring loaded retainer at the bottom of the head light bucket and pull the ring foward. I know the question sounds dumb, but with a 30 year old, I don't want to tear it up by doing it wrong.

Rush the tab then rotate the ring counterclockwise until it stops. You can then pull it off.
