  • Torque Specifications

Hi, all. I can do the conversion math to determine torque values (well, with alittle help from my son), but once I know how tight to torque a nut, I still have no idea just how to go about knowing how "torqued" it is! And, THIS torques me off!

So, if the book says "tighten to 39N.m or 28ft-lb" how do I know when I reached that degree of tightness? I thought I just rotated that old torque wrench until I couldn't get it any tighter, but apparently, that is not the way it's done.

Can someone educate me? The kid at Sears' only suggestion was that I come back tomorrow when Sam is there. . .

      Kind of Torque Wrench?

They come in kinds? I thought they were just those heavy Sears handles with interchangable ends, that clicked when you went in reverse. . .oh, maybe what I have is a ratchet and not a torque? Can I start over?

What does a torque wrench look like and what kind do I need to buy?

Depends on how much you want to spend and how accurate you want to be. Read this and see what they look like, then decide which one you want.

          Hey Cam,

Some folks swear by a torque wrench for every nut and bolt they tighten, others have learned from experience the good-n-tight method for most frame nuts/bolts. But there are certain specific ones that IF you plan on doing any major maintanence or repairs to the engine, clutch, etc.. a good "COUPLE" of torque wrenches may be needed!

Several small nuts and bolts need very little torque, but because they are in alunimum, if too much is applied, can strip/pull out/thru ruining your day! Examples are the cam shaft bearing cap nuts at only 7 ft/lbs, the clutch star plate bolts at 7ft/lbs. So in these situations an INCH POUND torque wrench is needed because the standard Ft/Lb ones are not sensitive enough for those low levels of torque.

The other standard torque wrench will work for all the other nuts/bolts that can use 25-100+ft lbs.
