    Hey Jeffe,

CORRECTED POST! Thanks Chop for jogging my memory, I went back and did a search for my old posts....my CRS is acting up tonight! I NOW remember some previous research that I had done, the 52mm bells were on the 78E and 79F, the 79SF and later models all the way to the XJ's were 54mm. Once again we can thank Yamaha and their continuous changes to specs for this bit of confusion!

        pods

I made a custom airfilter box for member oldyam80sg and he sent me the old single boots that he said kept falling off. I see why, there is two separate lip profiles on these aftermarket (non K&N) pods 54mm outter and 52mm inner. This design is cheesy and when you screw clamp them to the bells, they basically slip themselves off from the 52 to 54mm incline.....junk

They all have the same size 54mm bells. I have measured both side by side.

I just put 54mm's on a 79 standard, and they fit fine. My carbs are all stamped 'E' on the bottom.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Mine has the cheap Emgo pods. Cleaned them a few weeks ago and noticed the same thing, they wanted to slip off when clamping them on. I had to hold the clamps forward, toward the engine, while tightening them down. Kind of a pain, but it worked.

xschop-If you look at the filters you will see that they are indeed K & N.

                  no offense meant

These were kindly donated by Oldyam80sg and I will be trying a new chemical on them to try and soften them up. I meant that the double lip design was junk....chop

Jeffe - the 54mm Mikes XS pods will fit. Mikes XS part #15-0035. Don't forget a breather filter and some filters for the carb vent tubes (lawn mower fuel line filters will work).
