  • ARGGGG!!!fuel in the airbox

I rebuilt the carbs a couple months ago and the bike runs out great but it is hard to start when hot.I got tired of that yesterday
and decided to pull the carbs again(been puttin it off because airbox removal is a pita).I noticed right away (mr obvious moment) that there was gas in the airbox when I pulled the bottom of it off.I also rebuilt the octy at the same time, however when I went to disconnect the fuel lines fuel was running out.I had the lever on run so I figured it would not flow.So either the new parts were junk to begin with or I screwed the octy up myself.Who knows,it must be time to delete the octy lol.Anyway I pulled needle and seat on carb #1 and the needle already has a small groove around it..So I guess I'll order anew one.Is this odd to have a ring on viton tip after acouple months?

I don't know if its odd but i cleaned the carbs multiple times and still got fuel dripping out. However i couldn't remove the float pins on the 2 outside carbs-thats where the fuel leaked out.The other 2 inside carbs were fine after i replaced the needle valves and seats and cleaned the passages out so they were spotless. Finally i decided that i had to remove the float pins to get at the other valves and seats. It took awhile but i managed to get out the float pins without breaking any posts.I pulled the valves and seats and cleaned the passages so they were spotless.I then sprayed the seats with a thin coat of WD-40 so they would slide in easier and reinstalled everything and now no leaks.I also very slightly bent the tangs upward when i installed everything and things have been good for 100 miles.IMO the carbs might have dirt somewhere in there.Good Luck!

Well I let that needle sit while I took apart another one and cleaned my air filter. It looks like the viton tip has good memory.the groove came out. There is still a barely visible line now.My #3 carb, I notice the gasket is dark where it has been wet.I suspect that may be the problem.I took it out and the seat. The o-ring looks ok so I put the floats back in and blew in the fuel lines. The seats seem to hold pressure. When I rebuilt them I set the floats at .9".I'm now going to check float levels and maybe raise them a little so the level is lower in the bowl.It should be ok at .9 since recommended height is 23mm (.906")though.I bought cheap pods when I first started working on the bike ,but after rebuilding the carbs I put the airbox back on with a K&N filter.I think I will reinstall the pods until I know the carbs are straightened out, then I will go back to the airbox.I like the look better with airbox rather than pods. But the box is too cumbersome to have to take off and on a bunch of times Oh btw the carbs are really clean,no junk in bowls or under seats.Well I'm back to the garage.I'll be back in a bit and will post a few pics to see if anyone sees anything I dont.

Heres a few pics.I had the #3 float twisted ,it measured about .94
on one side and .915 on the other.#1 was twisted about .01.I straightened them and adjusted floats to .92.I set them on the engine upside down without bowls and hook a fuel line from the front nipple on one petcock to the front nipple of the other.I hooked the rear nipple on each petcock to a fuel inlet T.Turned to prime and I get no fuel to either carb.Turn to on and fuel on line between front two nipples fills.????

In the first pic the seat has white stuff on it.I tried seafoam in it the last tank of gas.I wonder if that is from that.

Those lines; I've used 'em. Any alcohol in the fuel will cause meltdown inside the lines, that will get into the the carbs, and everything else, that the fuel goes to. (RE; "the white stuff" in the pic.) Possibly, there are several other fuel additives, that have ingredients, that may do the same with those lines.

I finally went with the Gray Tygon expensive lines; dunno why DennisKirk quit carrying them. They can be found elsewhere on the net.

I've tried most all of the fuel line types. Gray Tygon cheaper in the long run, and no problems. I guess they'll, also, last forever. All others won't.
