  • new guy got a couple questions

I am new here and have an 1980 xs1100 special. First thing i was wondering does anyone make an aftermarket air filter if so were and who and how much? if i put single filters on what do i do with the breathers. Next thing does any one have a number 1 carb for either a 79 or an 80 I have a set of both with broken number one carb? The other thing I dont have an asir cleaner onthe bike and I took it for a quick ride and it seems very doggy will the air filter make a difference? What plugs should I run?
    Any help would be Great!

Welcome, lots of info here, do a search for pod filters on this forum and you will have lots of answers/options. For plugs, stock is NGK BP6ES but you can also see.....http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...&threadid=2591

Don't run the bike without a filter, you can end up with a lot of crud/dust in your carbs and then you'll have lots of fun.

Search parts for sale section to find carbs. Usually a set or two on ebay now and again.

JS - More information on your machine is needed. How long have you had it? Did it sit for an extended period of time? Have the carbs been cleaned? Have the jets been changed? What is you float height set at? What kind of condition is your gas tank in? Is the octopus still in place? What kind of exhaust is in place? Need the whole picture to determine where to go next.

In answer to your question about pod filters, you can get them at Mikes XS for $16 ea. (54mm variety). They also sell a filter you can attach to the crankcase breather hose - expect it to smoke. A couple of lawn mower fuel line filters on the two vent hoses that come off the top of the carbs will keep that part clean.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

          Hey DB,

The 79SF carbs and my 81SH are both 54mm OD on the inlet bell.

          And JOSH,

I would like to direct your attention to the STICKY thread at the top of this FORUM, you might want to take a look at it for some research and lots of information that is available!

PS: Just editted this reply, will fix my other one as well, should have gone and done a search first for my OLD REPLIES, my CRS is getting to me! My previous research and other posts showed the the 78E and 79F had the 52mm bells, but the 79SF and later carbs had the 54mm bell!

Thanks guys. I broke the float pin post on the number one carb. I got it running alot better two plugs were fould. I feel pretty stupid for not checking them. I did just buy the bike and yes it sat for a year or two. I did clean the carbs thats how I broke the one. then I bought a set for a 79 and cleaned and installed them. I did remove the octopus. One other thing should the vaccume advance go on the carb nipple or the intake boot fitting. I would really like to keep the original air box if i can but i need the filter. can I get an aftermarket one or is the only thing aftermarket the pods. Yamaha wants like 40 bucks just thought someone would make one a little cheaper. can get them for alot of other bikes why not these?

JS - There's a thread on here somewhere with the fix for a broken float pin post, so it's fixable. Probably easier to fix it than to swap the carbs off the tree. If you have the air box and just need a filter element, JC Whitney has foam UNI filters for about $15. I had one in mine until very recently, and it worked fine. I changed to the pod filters primarily to make it easier to get the carbs on and off. Made it a lot louder too. Wasn't expecting that. Vacuum advance hooks up on the number 2 carb. There should be a brass fitting for it close to where the carb goes into the hanger between the head and the carb body.

If you look on the front page of this section(I.E. down several posts from this thread) 81XSPROJECT posted his float post fix.It is one of the most professional ones I have seen. And it should be very strong.

I just put individual uni filters my 80 sg

                    Hi,
I rebuilt the carbs on mine ( they are stock) and I'm running stock pipes.
I went to the local Yamaha shop and bought 117.5 main jets because I went to individual air filters on each carb. The plugs are burning clean and bike is working good.

TC - I have a 79F, but I wouldn't swear that it has the original carbs. They are all stamped on the bottom with an 'E'. They are BS 34 II's, so when I ordered the filters I went by the part description on Mikes XS and got the ones for Mikuni BS 34 CV which were the 54mm pods. I never measured the bells, but the pods fit nice and tight. Like I always say, I'd rather be lucky than good any day
