  • 81 std saddlebags fit 79 std bag frame?

I'm thinking of buying some hard saddle bags to replace mine for my 79 xs1100f...

The one's i'm wanting to get are from a 81 std. I don't know if they would work with the original bag frame for my old bags? Mine are the kind that have a latch in front and back, for the lid, and have two bolts on the outside part that you can see that bolt to the bags...

The 81 bags have one latch on the side closest to the bike, and don't appear to bolt to the chrome part of the bag frame that wraps around them like mine do...

Does anyone know if this would work?

    Thanks,

    -Chris-

I have a set that had front and back latches and another set that has the side latch?(it locks with a key from the top of the lid)
Is that what you are talking about? both seem to have the double chrome bar wraps. I guess I need to find some pics to post to clear up what I am talking about....
What are you going to do with your old bags? I am missing the tops from the style with front and back latches. ANy chance yours will be available for parts?!?

If I end up getting the ones that have the latch on the in side, then yes, my lids will be available. The paint on them is not in very good shape. They appear to have sat outside a while, but they are solid with no cracks, and the latches work well...

      Thanks for the reply

You are correct, they both have the double chrome bars that wrap around, but it appears that on the kind with the two latches there is two spots on the double chrome bars that it screws into the bags. And it doesn't look like the ones with the single latch from a later year do...?

On both types of bags, there are 2 outside bolts that connect to the bars area (between them) and 4 inside bolts that connect the bag to the bracket, which then connects to the bike.

I have not looked at both sets side by side for small details, but looking at one and then the other, they both seem to be that same as far as mounting goes, on the bike and on the bags.

Are these the types of bags that you want? about*0-81 models?

Those bags from the pics should have 2 places on the outside by the chrome bars where they bolt up, and 4 places on the inside of them where they bolt up to the brackets that help bolt it to the bike. Does that help to answer your qustions?

There may be another variant of the bags out there, but I think each bag has 6 places where it bolts to something, 2 on the outside to the chrome bars area, and 4 on the inside where they bolt to the mounting brackets.

If I may ask a stupid question here....

I'm new to my 80G, and it has the bags with the single lock like in the picture. The right bag was damaged from an apparent fall two owners ago, leaving a massive crack on the outside, which I patched up.

The question I have is....other than for looks, what is the purpose of the chrome frame being bolted to the outside of the bag? Usually these bumpers are supposed to protect the bag, but it seems to me that if the bag is attached to the bumper, then the bag will get damaged when the bumper is hit. What good is that?

I personally have left off the side bumpers now, with just the cross-brace in the back remaining. I like it that way, makes for a sleeker-looking rig. The bags are nice and sturdy on the subframe plate after adding a support from the plate to the footpeg arm.

It's meant for minor bumps in the parking lot/your garage...If something went thunk against your bags without those bars, it would just shatter/crack/break your bags, as to where it would just bump against the bumpers and maybe dent them a little but the bags would be intact. They aren't meant to protect it in a high impact situation, just low impact bumps and scrapes...

Thanks for all your help everyone...

Thanks Chris! It's just that I've lived with Gold Wings and Ventures for the past 20 years and none of the bag rails were ever attached to the outsides of the bags. Just seems like doing that would amplify the impact to the bag and negate the idea of protection....

How wide are those? I bought a NOS set of those lids in Macho Maroon and it turns out the bags I have are much wider. I'd sure like to sell them to someone that can use them. Send me a PM with an eMail address and I'll send you some pix.

I've have 2 sets of bags that have the rails attached to the outside. On sent was made by Pacifico and the other I thought were factory Yamaha but could be Califia. I don't have lids for the later set and I was thinking about ising the mounts to hang some other bags.

My 79 standard has Vetter bags on it and they're too high and too far forward for me... I'll either rework the mounts or install one of the other sets of bags...

                            Are the mounts factory mounts?

                              mounts and lids

I have extra mounts to the vetter style? I think. I am looking for lids for the type of bags that have front and rear clasps.
