  • Petcock caps

Got rid of octopus on the 79SF. I am currently running a line from one petcock to the other for the prime taps. What is the best way of capping the taps? I want to get rid of the extra fuel line.

      Stay tuned to channel 11.

I'm wondering if the vac nipple caps would work? I'm just concerned that I use something that 1)stays put and 2)doesn't deteorate from the fuel.

A 1/4 inch ID vacuum cap is perfect for capping off the prime port on the Special petcocks. The fuel will not dissolve the rubber.

            Use neoprene caps(shiney), not rubber.
Fuel will eat rubber, especially it there is ethanol in it.

Any auto parts store will have them. One thing that sux about a lot of parts stores is nowadays they don't have items like that in bulk, it's all in pre packaged assortments, and you usually need to buy two packs to get what you need.

                  That's for sure.

I wanted to buy some fuel filters to test them as dampers for my vac guages. They had some on the shelves but no pricing. As I didn't care about the actual type I told him I just wanted the cheapest ones. He said he would have to cross reference each individual part no. to figure out the cheapest ones.

Another place I went to, looking for crush washers......parts guy asked for what type of vehicle.....I said it doesn't matter, I need 10mm crush washers!!......said he needs to know vehicle type first...computer doesn't list crush washers....I tell him go ask a mechanic where they are.....he did and the mechanic showed the parts guy where they were!!!!!! Then it only took another 15-20 minutes to figure out the pricing as they had no SKUs!!!!!!!!

                    Found them

Stopped at an ALL Pro on the way home last night. Found a box of assorted "rubber" vaccuum caps. On the back of the package it stated that they were neoprene as resitent to all sorts of chemicals. I'm assuming that they can also be found at the local Crappy Tire as the brand is HELP.

Anyway they're on and all is good.

I hooked both lines to a tee, then run the single line to the carbs, but it won't run right, maybe that's part of the problem, any one have this same set up? Thanks 'Dog

I had capped mine with rubber vacuum line caps from Napa, one failed after about 30 minutes, pouring gas all over a hot motor. Needless to say, not good, a narrow escape. I now have a fuel line joining the two instead. Still not an ideal solution though. What I plan to do after the riding season, is to pull the fittings out with a pair of vice grips, then thread the petcock hole with a heavily greased pipe thread tap. The grease will catch the chips.(may have to drill the hole to an apropriate size first, don't know yet). Then get two allen socket pipe thread caps, coat the threads with JB weld or such, and screw them in for a permanent solution.

I ditched the octopus a few years ago and did not cap off anything, works fine. Can't remember off hand how I ran the lines, I used a simple diagram posted here, but I don't recall making any big changes..
