  • Middle gear box smoke ??

    Hey,
I seem to solve one thing and find something new.....lol
I have a breather filter on the middle gear box and I have that mounted under the seat. I was waiting at a red light and just happened to look down and noticed that my "goods" were smoking!!!!
I thought it was electrical at first so, I QUICKLY dismounted and removed the seat but, found that it was comming from the breather filter while the engine is running. Is that normal???

I've never noticed it but there's always a first for everything. Have you checked the oil level in the middle gear box lately?

You sure that's not the crankcase vent?

I was thinking the same thing, I dont believe the middle drive has a vent, but I've wrong before.

Sounds like crankcase vent to me. You can get a little smoke from that due to blowby past your rings.

            Not smoke but a comment

            The
middle gear has a vent in the form of a small hose ,looks like vac hose . It runs up from the middle gear and is secured near the top of the air box or there-abouts . Often I see it is mistakenly ran down along side the battery hose over the swing arm bearing housing . It can then pick up moisture and contaminate the middle gear lube . DAMHIKT

              Smoke

Seems to me that the nature of the crankcase vent system has the vacuum from the airbox sucking fumes up through the big hose and recycled into the carbs . My hose also produces the odd drop of oil on the air filter . Think positive crankcase ventilation(PCV) . If you have not got these parts and are running pods with a filter on the vent outlet , fume will exhaust there and may even be visible ??? Just guessing and I felt like typing ... good luck

On the 79's it runs up to a small bracket that is secured with the top bolt for the airbox. A lot of times, if the hose is off the bracket, it can be puzzling to figure out what the bracket is there for. The bracket also doubles to secure the part of the wiring harnes that runs past it.

                  Hey Guys,

I may have to elaborate, it's the large vent hose. I thought it was the middle gear vent.

                  Thanks,

                    Hi Nemisus,

Big hose is the crankcase breather. Tired motors (or very HOT motors!) will breathe a little oil fume, but even the best of engines will breathe a little steam if they have sat a while; It is just how they get rid of any condensation from the oil.

                      Hey AlanB,

It was a 90+ day and riding 2 up. It made me a bit nervous to say the least.

                      Thanks,
