  • middle and final drive fluids

Since there seems to be a significant number of middle gear problems, I thought I would share this:

For the first year or so of owning my XSs, I would check the oil in all three (Engine, Middle & final drive) places before each ride. The middle and final drives where always right on and the oil looked like honey. After awhile I wondered how a bike of this age and mileage could have such perfect gear oil. I decided to change the oil in both the middle and final drives.

Thick gunk like peanut butter drained out. I flushed both out with kerosene and filled them with 30w oil. I drove the bike around the block a couple of times. Drained the 30w and replaced it with 90w. I have put 30K on my "F" since without a problem (knock on wood).

The Cherry Bomb had the same sort of gunk in the middle gear unit when I bought it. I wish I would have flushed it with kerosine like you did, but I just changed it and I do this every year. That bike's transmission sounds like a truck's. I have put 25K mikes on it and never a problem.
