  • Crank case pressure?

Did an oil change tonight and ran the engine with the oil fill cap off. Is it normal to have air blowing back out of the fill hole?

I did a search but didn't really find an answer.

    Thanks,

    Paul

I would think so.I have a K & N crankcase breather and it does breathe.I can see something coming out!

I've seen leaving the oil cap off in a car make a real mess. been a few years since I saw it, if I remember correctly, after a twenty minute drive, the entire underside of the hood was dripping with oil. doesn't really surprise me that it would shoot back out. in fact, I had a 1990 Volvo 740 turbo a while back and when I got it, the seal on the filler cap was bad, is routinely dumped oil all over the top of the engine....that was just with a bad seal on the cap. that's all I got, have a nice day and ride safe

Paul yes it is. There is quite a lot of air movement.

Yes, as the pistons move up and down the air must be displaced in the crankcase somehow. Also, as the rings wear, you will also get a certain amount of blow by entering the case.

          Why???

            Ernie,

Did it more by accident than on purpose. It was just when I was idling up to temperature.

I also have a very predominent tick in the top end. Sounds like its in the valve train but its hard to pinpoint. It's more pronounced on the right side than on the left.

I had an '84 Olds Delta 88 in college. Changed the oil at a friend's house since I was in the dorms. One oil change I went to remove the cap and it wasn't there. I looked and there it was sitting on the window sill ....from the last time I changed the oil. I'd been running for 3-4 months with no cap, and didn't have a problem. It was probably a good thing it was wintertime.

You may want to seek immediate medical attention for that, I think there are some new medications out there that may help.

                      Pete,

When I searched the site for similar problem posts I found one where the owner did just about everything to find and stop the tick and ended up swapping the head out for a used one. No more tick!

I'll check what I can to make sure I'm not going to trash the engine. This might be this winter's project.

Have you checked the exhaust gaskets? Mine developed a tick a few weeks ago, and I discovered a couple of loose header nuts

As you know Paul I just did the head on mine (twice ): ) and now new cam chain valves all set right. The thing is still noisy I believe it is just a damn noisy engine. I also have a bigger windshield on this one and maybe it is reflecting more of the noise back at me.
