  • 1st to 2nd

I really have been annoyed by 1st to 2nd gear shifting. All other gear shifts are quick, but 1st to 2nd takes a steady 2 clicks up from first and there has to be a solution to this. Can the shifting mechanism be modified to make the transition easier/quicker?....Inquiring minds want to know

I think you may be suffering from tranny issues. While it does take a slightly firmer and more thorough shift, I have never NEEDED to do a double shift from first to second. Maybe time for undercutting. The washer swap may also help, but I don't know.

      undercut and washer

No, I've already done that to this motor. I have riden many XS11's and they all have the slow 1st to 2nd gear shift (to me it seems)...I was thinking maybe the shift drum catches get worn...I will also check the return spring that T.C. pointed out in a recent thread....chop

        Hey Chop,

The return spring really mostly affects the Down Shifting, not so much upshifting! Gravity helps with the upshifting action!

But, have you set the alignment of the shift drum and pawl?? There are mark on the drum and pawl that are supposed to line up when in 2nd gear. Tod posted some nice photos a few days or so ago, but I can't remember which thread it was in?? IF the marks aren't lined up, it might require more throw distance to get the drum to rotate to make the shift???

        Are you using the clutch??

            clutch

Yes, always use the clutch. I see there is another spring on the intermediate gear there (under white lines)... does that effect the drum catch lever?

That spring just keeps the pawl arm pushing against the shift drum, but the pawl has rounded outer edges so that after a shift, it can ride up over the nearest pin, and then drop back down into position ready to grab the next pin....ratchet action!

                2nd

So, when all the marks line up you say it's in 2nd? IIRC when I'm in 2nd gear, I also have to press the lever down once to return to Neutral and then again to first....

Yep, in 2nd. But if you have to actually release and press the shifter down 2 times from 2nd to get it to go into 1st, then something isn't right. I have to gingerly push down on mine to get it into neutral from 2nd, otherwise it will drop right down into 1st with 1 shift action, same going up!!! HTH!
