  • 3000-3600 rpm vibration

    Among other dumb questions...this bike seems to have an annoying vibration between 3000 and 3600 rpm's, in all gears...
    any suggestions??

    If vibration is there at the same revs regardless of speed its problably motor related......I would try syncing the carbs. If it only occurs at a certain speed it would be drivetrain, suspension related (wheel balancing, etc.)

      Thanks for the info...thats one of the things i need to do....

      planning on replacing all fuel lines, intake boots, and replacing the
      stock airbox with the pods.....

      any input about the fuelcock on my earlier post?????

        You have three points in the front of your motor that it mounts to the frame, and one in the back. All these points have rubber bushings. Make sure all these points are still tight. If the rubber is gone or missing, it could do this even if they are tight.

        It could be carb related though since that rpm range is where the pilot and main jets are starting to swap over.

          I had a really nasty vibration at the same place on my Standard and it turned out that the insides of my mufflers had rattled loose, and that RPM range really got everything in there moving. After cutting off the stock mufflers and popping on a set of slip ons, she is smooth as silk right through to redline.

            could be that too.....cans are not bad shape, but not great either...but seems to be coming from "front" of bike...not the rear....but it could be transferring up to the main exhaust pipes and shaking a bit up there if they arent tight.....thanks..will check it out!!!

              Mufflers

              I think Rob (79XS11F) mentioned a vibration at a certain range and it turned out to be rubber mounts for the exhaust. He went to steel mounts and vibration dissappeared.

              I definitely would make sure bike is in tune first, before trying to chase down other things. On mine, syncing the carbs made a world of difference, bike feels way smoother than ever.

                Rubber mounts are specifically there to get rid of vibration. If steel mounts could do that, rubber mounts would not exist.

                Your rubber mounts may be shot and need replacing.

                Another issue is that people tend to overtighten the rear rubber mounts, to the point the rubber is not doing anything. Check they are not too tight, and that your lockwashers are there so you don't lose the acorn nut.
