I'll take the first shot at it and say 1980 XS1100 Special.

The fender is off something else but it sure looks like my 80 special.

A couple of details for you that you can't tell from the pics. It has a 17" rear wheel. The original speedo and tach are missing so don't know if they were round or square.

Look at the slope of the top of the right side cover. That would be an 80-81 Special.

the kick starter is plugged off
so it is not a 78 or 79

slotted rotors also puts it into a 80 or 81

An 81 special if that's the original alternator cover. The 80 didn't have the circle around the Yamaha. There are definitely many alterations. That may not even be the original engine... The only way to tell on a bike like this would be the vin number.

That might account for the fender.

How could the forks be standard if the brakes are special?

Looks like it's mostly a Standard with a Special tank, but I can't really get a good look at the frame.

Groovy lookin way to change the Spaghetti exhaust. Not very good for cornering clearance tho.

i would say it is a special with a standard front end........seat is obviously custom and rear fender may have been changed.

Thanks for your input guys. You see my dilemma. I want a new seat and misc other things but I don't know what will fit. Can anyone tell by looking if I should get a std or spc seat?
