so it is not a 78 or 79

An 81 special if that's the original alternator cover. The 80 didn't have the circle around the Yamaha. There are definitely many alterations. That may not even be the original engine... The only way to tell on a bike like this would be the vin number.Tim Ripley - Gaithersburg, MD

i would say it is a special with a standard front end........seat is obviously custom and rear fender may have been changed.1979 XS1100 SF "Black Goblin"
