  • fuel light

Today i repaired the stripped holes in my vacuum advance cover after purchasing a Heli-coil kit.Repair was very easy because i do that at work almost everyday.I fixed the oil drip coming out of my drain plug by putting Teflon tape on the threads and it has not leaked for 2 days.I was hoping on riding today but it started to rain(figures)So because i am off tomorrow (July 4th)if it doesn't rain then i will take it for a ride. One question- I repaired my fuel light by splicing the 2 wires in the harness and attached a spade connector to the tank. The fuel light is always on-How much fuel do i need to to have in the tank before it shuts off?

It can't be more than a gallon. At least not on my special.

I put almost 2 gallons in and the light is still on.I attached 2 wires using butt connectors to the green and black wires and ran them up to the tank and then used a spade terminal to join the 2 together.I attached the spade to the piece on the tank and the light is as soon as i turn the key.Any suggestions?

Just want to be sure that you didn't actually put the green/black wires together!? There are two separate wires in the harness that each wire going to the sender unit need to connect to, but the green/wires are not to be connected directly to each other??

The Thermistor/sender unit in the tank heats up and completes the circuit when the fuel gets low, and the completed circuit is what connects the green wire to the black-ground to light up the light. When the sender is covered with fuel, it's cool, and the connection is interrupted, therefore no light.

But if you have the green/black wires connected together, you have essentially bypassed the sender unit, hence the light all the time??

I ran 2 separate wires from the green and black wires in the harness and then connected them together by the tank using a spade to join them.Is that correct? They join together by the spade.

Are there 2 connectors on the tank?I have to look more closely.I was anxious to actually have a fuel light.I have not had it connected in almost 10 years!

              fuel light

I asked this question in a previous thread but got no response so here goes. The wires that go to the tank-are there 2 connectors that go to the tank for the fuel light?I connected the wires at the harness and ran them to the tank where i joined them together using a spade connector but are the wires supposed to connect to 2 separate pieces on the tank sending unit?

                Hey OldYam,

You must have missed what I said in your OTHER thread RUNS, I merged it with this one.

The green and black wires are supposed to connect to 2 separate connectors on the sending unit. One of yours may have broken off??

Thanks TC- but thats what i was wondering about the sending unit.I guess i have to look more closely at the sending unit.It should have 2 connectors to attach to.I will fix tomorrow. Thanks again!

I only have one tab to put the connector on as the other one that looks like a big rivet holding it on has broken off. What are my options? Can i connect green to that one tab and black-ground to a bolt that holds the sending unit to the tank?

I would try soldering a tab to the RIVET, it's really a plastic isolater...if you clean it off good, you'll see! You need to connect the green wire to that connector.

The black wire one CAN/Could connect to a bolt because it is connected to the tab that is directly welded/soldered to the plate which is a simple ground.
