    Help!

New to me XJ100, speedo not working. Found broken cable, removed and used a small bit with a drill to test speedo meter, it does not move but seems to be turning inside maybe? I am thinking the speedo caused the cable to break. Can the speedo be repaired? It seems hard to find these parts... Any help is appreciated!

This might sound like a daft question but, is the drill turning the piece of broken speedo cable the right way?

I'm having problems with my speedo, it has to catch up (slow response). I have taken it off and oiled it several times. I've tried the drill test also, clockwise and counter clockwise, and neither made the needle move. I just think that a drill doesn't have enough rpm's. I haven't tried the Dremel yet, which way does the speedo need to be turned?

The drill needs to be spinning CCW as you are looking at the BACK of the speedo....think about which way the needle needs to swing, that same direction is the way the cable needs to spin.

These speedos as we have recently discovered from another thread spin at ~2240 rpms for reading 60 MPH. I can't remember how fast my reversible drill spins, but would think that it can easily get to that rpm level, or at least 1/2 to be able to read 30 mph!

There's a TECH TIP in the MODS section that shows you how to fit an earlier model 160 or any variation you can find into the XJ's housing!!

Thanks, good information. I actually did try the drill both ways with different RPM's too...
