  • Replacement Fairing for a 1978 XS1100E

    Hello:
I just purchased a 1978 XS1100 E (44k miles) and ive got a question, the bike needs a new fairing badly the last owner pretty much let the original fall off the bike it's so badly broken along with the bag racks.

Ive read what I can on this site and saw that a Windjammer would fit this bike but the original fairing is huge and almost square with a square headlight and square front blinkers and it has 3 dials on it ( volts, water temp, clock) and a radio with speakers and a cig lighter, the problem is i am pretty sure i need to keep those dials (volt and temp), the windjammers ive seen on ebay look way too small and this fairing has a Yamaha sticker so any ideas what or who made this and what would be a close replacement?

also the last owner said this was a 1979 bike but the SN# checker on this site says its a 1978 which do i believe the title or SN# for parts and such?

You can fit a Vetter Windjammer to your bike. You will need a Vetter XS mount and the fairing itself. Depending on your luck, the mount sells for $25 - $50 and the fairing from $75 - $100 in general. Make sure you get the 'pigtail' wiring that connects the bike to the fairing. You can also get the lowers for cool-weather leg protection; price is in the $50 - $75 range.

The later Vetters (III, IV, V) come with built-in turn signals. All have built-in headlights, so there is not a problem there. As they were designed to use the headlight you removed from the bike during the original set-up, you may have to buy a round headlight for the fairing if it does not come with one. Radio module was extra and costs about the same as the fairing. The Vetter units do not have the gauges in them, which is a bummer if you already have them in your existing set-up.

Some very good information on www.craigvetter.com about Vetter fairings.

Another manufacturer was Pacifico, who went out of business after suffering a fire in their shop a couple of years ago. More angular looking, not as commmon as the Vetter but some think the design had better airflow and venting. Same deal as the Vetter, generic fairing with a bike-specific mount. There were a few other manufactures as well in addition to the Yamaha-labeled gear.

    Good luck!

        William,
I have a very good condition '79 stock fairing complete with lowers and all mounting brackets which is for sale. It was only on the bike for the first 6000 miles of the bike's life and has been in storage since. Also have bags and bag hardware. You can contact me directly at: avilamarketing@aol.com.

          Pacifico Fairing

I just saw a complete Pacifico set ( fairing, bags, and trunk) on Ebay. I think it came from a 78E. Search 'Vetter' it showed up there.
