  • OEM air cleaner

I am in need of an OEM air filter for my 1980 XS1100 Special.
I have the bike in being rejetted and adjusted, and the mechanic wants to (needs to) get more air restriction than what I am getting with the K&N filter in the stock airbox.
None of the local dealers or shops have an OEM part, only the UNI or K&N.
Short of special ordering from the dealer,(5 days out), any ideas where this can be found NOW in or near San Jose, CA?
I tried a few websites, but again only found the UNI and K&N.
    TIA,
    Mike

The question is - Why does your mechanic need a more restrictive air filter, if he is rejetting?

I'd get my bike out of the hands of that mechanic.

Unless you are specifically trying to get better mileage and making everything completely stock, then something is wrong there.

If, by some chance, you actually do need a stock air filter, go here:

I agree, your mechanic is full of crap, or he is missing something else (i would guess a mechanical problem with one or more carbs, diaphram, float height, blocked passages etc.) ....I run a Uni-Filter (in my test less restrictive than the K&N) or I do have a K&N that I have also run. I even have holes cut in the bottom of air box and a set of Jardine slip ons. I am still not getting 'too much air'. You can effectively rejet the carbs for almost any amount of air without going to a more or less restrictive filter.......The common practice is too allow the most air to get in (filter) and the most air to get out (exhaust) and then jet and adjust the carbs to add enough fuel at all RPM ranges, anything else will sacrifice performance. This is why I do everything myself. 90% of bike mechanics are idiots.

Read this to learn about jetting carbs and then tell him yourself. Carb Tuning

If you really need more air restriction get panty-hoses, cut legs and fit it around your after-market filter.

Lol, at first I thought you were going to say something about wrapping the hose around your head...need to cut back on the caffeine I suppose

I'll give ya an idea of how dangerous a bad bike tech can be. A very good friend of mine was hurt pretty badly this past weekend with me right on his trail as he was riding home from the shop. He rides a very nice Harley Sportster. The tech left the spring retainer for the kickstand loose. When the kickstand fell down and my buddy tried to make a left hand turn it popped the rear tire up in the air and out to the side. You get the idea from there. Please for your health and safety find someone else to work on your bike. My buddies leg should be well enough to ride again with me in about a month.
                  Jason.

Thanks for expressing your concerns regarding my mechanic, but I believe that they are not warranted.
I guess that I am a little more open minded than some others.
I am a believer in the concept that there is more than one way to skin a cat.
After going back to the stock air filter, and adjusting everything, this bike runs like a champ!!
On a Dyno run, it produces 73 HP to the wheel, with 56 lbs of torque.
Sure, it might even go higher with the K&N, but it never ran rearly as smoothly as it does now.
In looking at the specs listed in this site, I think that I am getting as much HP now as it had 23 years ago.
                    Ride safely,
                    Mike

Hey of, it's a combination of the sun's rays, the heat, and the fact that I missed bike week yet again!
