  • Value increasing?

I was reading a forum (can't remember where) recently and noticed the kbb value of a '78 Kawa had risen by 100% in a year. The forum post was from 2007 (kbb value quoted was ~$1,200), and the current value for the same bike was ~$2,100 now.
I currently have a '79 XS1100sf getting rebuilt right now ($1,500) including: rings, valves, carbs(cleaned/adjusted), new 2nd gear, right side cover, battery, left fork seal, all gaskets etc...

I was thinking of cleaning it up and selling it, but I really like the bike. Are these bikes starting to gain value right now? If so I may just hang on to it. It's not costing me anything more right?

Because of rising fuel costs all motorcycles are gaining in value IMO.

EVERY running bike is starting to go up in value right now. There's an explosion of idiots that can't ride, but want the better gas mileage. I used to see our XS/XJ bikes all the time for 300-500 dollars. Now it's getting hard to find one that runs for less than 1500.

I'm hoping the winter months brings the prices back to reasonable again, but if you plan to sell... summer months tend to be the most profitable.

Okay, thanks for the info. I'm seeing a bunch of new riders here in Sacramento. The number of motorcycle accidents is increasing as well...
Just wait, there's going to be all kinds of new laws about motorcycles... I can see it now.

well that's how I got my previous and current bike: somebody crashed & dumped

must say I am falling in love with this beast tho, what a great bike. But then again, if there were a god, I wouldn't sweat cornering, wouldn't shake from anxiety at the sight of brake lights ahead, and wouldn't mark every day as one day closer to the death of my gear box

for years I was riding CB 650 (had 2, one bought from a stunt man, the other some gardeners pushed from a yard to the side of the street), till they died, dreaming of a real bike that would hold on the freeway, wouldn't scream to keep up and most of all wouldn't make me feel like a duck the first day of open season

so please keep buying new powerful or fuel efficient bikes, do continue to zoom past as the king of your own fate, as long as you don't crash too hard so that I can fix your bike for cheap years from now

yep, one man's shameful trash is another man's safest commuter

according to that vintage bike price guide you can read in the book store a 79 in xcellent shape was 5000 bucks??? and one in good shape was lie 3000??? they describe the conditions and what thery mean. alot of those old ones are pricy to the right person!

                            Well I bought my XS,

Last summer for $1800. I thought it was a high price, but the ad on Craigslist said it needed nothing and was in perfect shape. I got lucky, the guy was a real Yamaha nut and had the old girl running perfect. He had a garage full of XS650's.
So, In the meantime I have been worried about a couple of issue's, one being the CPU. Once in a while she will only fire on two, usually when she is hot.
                            When I bought it, she had o' 38K, now it's got 46k.
Back to the subject 5000 grand is to much unless Bob Jones built it. IMHO
If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself..

Last year, for kicks, I put my XS info into a "whats it worth" site. Get this:

                              79 XS1100. Moderately used condition...68,000 USD to a collector.

                              Anyone collecting lately? LOL...

For real...that was the value I got. Besides...even withOUT gas prices...my XS is worth it's weight in GOLD. To me, at least. What you have is a classic. It'll always be worth WAY more than you put into it. And you're thinking of letting that go? Dude...buy a Vespa, pimp it out, sell it to some yuppie without a clue, and keep the XS. Strictly my opinion, not supported or backed the moderators of this website.
