  • 3 good, 1 black

Spark plugs that is. 1,3,4 perfect tan color. #2 for some reason is black. Even when I had the idle mix screw all the way in. Jets, needles, float height all the same between all 4 carbs. Carbs merc stick synced.Only thing different on #2 is the vacuum advance. Could it cause #2 to be rich

Double check your spark, it may be that #2 is firing only sometimes. Even though wasted spark design means that two plugs fire at the same time, a bad plug lead, a bad plug may cause you a problem. Some have recommended cuting off a quarter inch of the spark lead and inserting it back in the cap often solves this problem. It did for me.

Switch the plug wires from 2 to 3 and vise versa and see what that does. If 3 starts misfiring, and 2 straightens out, then the plug wire or cap may be to blame.

When I did the pick up coil wire fix, I wired them backwards, and had to switch the the plug wires around so it would run. So I am pretty sure it is not the ignition circuit. However I do remember when I first got this beast running I was having problems with the #3 cylinder not firing all the time. Which I now believe the old #3 plug wire is connected to #2. So I guess it could be the plug wires. I'll do some searching now for replacement coils and wires .
        thanks

          pilot screw adjustment

Black is a sign of incomplete combustion . Is possible in both too lean and too rich conditions . With pilot screw in all the way some fuel is not burning and leaves a coating on the plug . Any other symptoms ? Colortune is my fav tool for this setting . But the "by ear" method is popular amoung some . Find the spot where the idle speeds up when set to 700-800 . There is a post on this

              YES

Yes . Top of carb in a recessed hole . Sometimes has rubber plug . If first time may have metal cap to be CAREFULLY drilled with a small hole ,fitted with a screw and pryed off . There are posts on this in detail

Maybe on the newer carbs. I have a 78. the screws I speak of are on top of the carb in the front, and have a tiny grooves in the head all the way around to allow for finger adjustment. I have read on here that they allow fuel in to mix with the air. The way I figured a black sooty plug means its running rich. So basically #2 is set up to idle lean(because the screw was all the way in, choking off the fuel), yet the plug is black. I need to check the plug wire, other than that the only difference is the advance vacuum. everything else set the same on all the carbs except for my air/fuel mix idle screw on #2
