Welcome!
Yeah... slippage can be a problem with these...
Here's a link to the transmission repair section that will give you a couple of ideas...
Repairs
If you do end up taking the engine apart for some reason (like the gears slipping)... it might be a good idea to do the Dremel fix anyway as preventive maintenance...
Once you get the bugs worked out... these are usually very reliable bikes... and strong as well...
Welcome again...

I've had several transmissions apart with the gears and everything... and have no idea what that link is saying about fingers and shifter dowels in the drum???

its not in the tranny just under the side cover its the drum that turns when you use your shifter. The pins fall out and you cant shift it it happened to me and is an eazy fixDoug Mitchell

winters...........pull your left side shift cover. Think you'll find the source of your problem there. shift drum has dowel pins that are held in place by a washer with ears on it. when the ears bend or break, the pins will fall out . likely a pin is out. If that's the case, look for it laying in the crevis's of the case housing. If you can't find it there, it most likely is in the pan. Myself, had one get picked up by tranny gears. The gears are apparently so hard that it was pulverized, as the remains of slivers were in oil fiter housing. Anyways, the pins and the special washer can still be got from Yammy. If you go that route, order extra pins and washers as they are only a few bucks each. Also make sure while tranny is shifted in 2nd gear that alignment slashes are lined up. Check shift pawl end play back and forth. If the two sets of teeth on both pieces come disengaged by end play, the the clutch side has to come off along with the whole clutch assembly, as that little shaft goes all the way across and retains idle gear for oil pump, and also retains the shift forks. On the end of that shaft is a small snap ring which keeps that shaft from moving horizontally. If it is off, it will be in the pan or up against the oil pump screen. If all that is the case, its not because of some flaw in design, it is the result of making a high RPM speed shift, hitting a false nuetral, tromping the shifter to engage some gear..........and I think you get my drift of tranny abuse, plus been there, done that some twenty-five plus years ago. Bet most here have been guilty of that with this bike at some time or other, specially when we were younger. Kinda funny how these bikes seem to have less problems the older we get. Disregard the white and green lines, but the red lines show the "Slashes" on that drum they are talking about that need to line up while in 2nd gear. There are also some dots that need to line up on the shift pawls drawn in red also.
The red lines on the left are near the drum they are talking about. You can see the star that is holding the dowel pins there.
