  • Lost cylinder 1 & 4 on 82 Maxim XJ1100

I have a 1982 Maxim XJ1100J that began to drop cylinder 1 & 4 randomly. After about an hour they were both gone and I couldn't get them back. I've read some of the other posts and tried several different things to see if I could fix the problem with no luck. I replaced the coils to the tune of almost $100.00 each and nothing changed. I checked the wiring from the magnetic pick-ups and everything seems to be in order. The next thing I tried was to reverse the wires coming from the CDI box to the coils. I took the one to the primary coil and switched it with the one to the secondary coil. When I did this the problem switched from cylinder 1 & 4 to cylinder 2 & 3. My guess is that the CDI box is bad. I have been looking around for a replacement one for some time and everything that I'm finding is $300.00 and up. I bought the bike for $750.00 and really didn't want to put that much into it. Has anyone got a suggestion where I could find one a little cheaper or possible something else that I'm missing that may be the problem?

There are aftermarket ones for the XJ, but I have no idea how well they work. I haven't heard anyone's opinion on them, but they are a little cheaper at $165. I have been tempted to try one out. Ebay item # 200232665032

If you have a little time and patience, you should be able to pick one up in the 40-50 dollar range off Ebay.... but you miss some riding time.

Another option is you can mail the TCI to me and I'll check it out for you. PM me if you're interested.

        XJ11 TCI

It happened on my XJ11 as well . I replaced the TCI with a cheaper($150) one from a 81 XS11 . It is a 4RO TCI . A mod was required . They are not plug and play . XJ11(10M) TCI's are expensive on ebay but the odd one comes up cheaper . There is also the aftermarket one from down under . Randy has a good test on his page . I had to double-clik the vid link to get the full 39sec video .

I had the exact problem with my XJ. It was the TCI. I ordered the one from New Zeland, seemed to work fine when I started the bike but when I took it for a ride the engine was rattling, sounded almost like pre ignition. I called them and asked for an opinion and all they said was to use premium gas, did that, no difference. Long story short I sent it back and found an original. No more problems. Yes they can be expensive but can be found if you have some patience.

New XJ1100 replacement TCI for sale

I have a brand new replacment TCI for a 1982 XJ1100J that I've never used, same as the one on Ebay # 200232665032. I'm looking to get the $165 that I paid for it plus shipping. I had to wait almost two months to get this shipped from New Zealand when I first ordered, it... PM me for details...

Isn't that the one that Cokeman said didn't work?. Me thinks the NZ unit does not have advance circuitry built into it, that is why it did not work. It obviously does not have the hookup for the boost sensor, either!

Randy, I'll have to do some research on that...I am working on the assumption that there is built in advance circuitry in the replacement...This is a Hyperpak box...

                    original vs aftermarket

My bad .I didnt realize we were talking about the aftermarket unit. I have no experience with this part . I would grab a extra stock type !

                      Hey there DSBatz,

Aside from what Axel stated about using an 81 4Ro box, it has the cent. advance timing curve programmed into it like the XJ's, but it uses the mech. vac adv unit. Axel is using it without the vac. adv., which works just fine, just isn't quite as good on fuel...per the bike reviews as to the function of the vac. adv. module vs. just cent. adv.!

Another option would be to find the older XS timing parts on Ebay....much cheaper, the mech. cent. adv. and the vac. adv. plus timing plate, PU coils, and then you could use the cheaper 2H7 TCI, much more plentiful and cheaper, or you could even make your own out of GM parts, see the tech tips, mods section.

I would think that the NZ one would have some form of timing adv. curve built into it, and like Axel's experience, you can run it with just Cent. Adv. curves and not use/need the vac. adv. curve. If it was pinging, sounds like it might be progammed with too much adv. ??

Thanks for all of the information. I am working on the bike again today to test a few more things. I am also looking with a few salvage yards to see if I can find a replacement for a more reasonable price. I'll let you know how I make out.
