Hello from further north Minnesota............ You actually took two of your older bikes to a Yamaha Dealer there in St Joeseph?? The dealers here in Bemidji won't even touch the bike. Can't even get oil filters from them. All our Yamaha dealership/garage keeps telling us is to buy a new bike. Don't need a new one -- own two Yamahas!
Good luck with your bikes.Last edited by zookey; 06-22-2008, 10:27 PM.1979 XS1100 Special - since 2008

re:yamaha dealership/repairs
I guess I should have been more correct in my last posting i meant to say the bar that goes from behind all the pickup coil stuff theres a bearing then a shaft of some sort could this be broken and still spin? or bent cuzz there was a loud bang sound while driving but at the time i was in heavy highway speed traffic and i thought it was the cars around me but realized it came from the right fronside of the bike(clyde his name) anyways it ran fine afterwards and about three rides later i developed the pickup coil symptoms bogging down/dieing just running crrappy.then winter storage and coil repair, rear brake plunger/caliper problems(grinding sound no real brake movement)and a little throttle slip needing 1/4 or so tightned(has drag bars now) and the speedo was loosened to not show milage I turned it tight but it spun the stuff in the front tire other than that this bike is scary fast 0-90 took him to 100 or there abouts and wow it just wants to pull out of your hands zippy/high rev tuned sounds great with the 4into1 kerker pipe race car sounding thru the gears up and down.sorry to ramble, but i rode this bike from Atlanta Georgia to rice MN in 5days last March during the final four.Sweet bike ,sweet ride. thanks for letting me vent.

right fronside of the bike
Round cover on left side is the pick-up coils and vacuum advance.
The pick-ups are actually magnetic switches.
If too far from the shaft will not send a signal to TCI to fire the coils/spark plugs.
Easy to check if getting spark or not. Pull one spark plug cap off. Insert a screw driver in cap. Holding plastic or wood handle, move screw driver shaft close (1/8") from engine. Crank engine and watch to see if spark jumps between screw driver shaft and engine.
Got spark...igniction working.
(check if getting fuel to carbs, then if getting into cylinders)
No spark then it's not.
Since there seems to be a problem at the pick-ups.
Not sure how anything can get "bent" in and around the pick-up but stuff happens. Compare what you have with your spare. Gap between pick-up and it's actuator on the shaft I think should be .6 to .7 mm. Been a while since I've checked one.
Host of other things that can happen to prevent spark plugs from firing, but need to start somewhere and the pick-ups possible damage and or recent repair make it suspect #1.

oil filters???!!!!
hey there zookey......have been thinking about your situation and i know just how 2 solve the problem....oil filters should be the least of your problems.....i know i just go into my dealership, and they pull one outta the drawer for me.....it is used on other bikes, but my dealership could not cross reference it for me....just walk into your yamaha dealership, don't tell them what kind of bike it is for, but give them this part #: 1J7-13441-10-00.....i bet they got a couple on the shelf......if so, tell them to keep them in stock....if not, let me know and i can get all ya want.....good luck with your ride....ross
p.s. do you know if your dealership sells ski's that fit over the front tire for winter riding up there....if so, get me a part # and contact....thanx in advance!!rebel devil
