  • fuel in lines

If i put my petcocks to off will the bike eventually die from lack of fuel? This seems like a stupid question but i got to ask.My lines have fuel that i can see clearly in them even when both petcocks are off.

that's the way they're supposed to work. off = no fuel flow. if the bike is running, and you turn the petcocks to off, it will take a few minutes but if everything is working correctly, the bike will starve for fuel and the engine will stop. if you still ahve fuel flow with the petcocks in the off position, there is a leak in the petcock(s). it is nothing more than a valve, closed = no flow, open = flow. there is a little more to them than that but not much. And no, it's not a stupid question, there is no such thing, except the question that isn't asked. have a nice day and ride safe

If you have Vacuum lines, then the fuel will not flow, think of a straw or pipette if you hold your finger over one end the liquid in the devices will not flow, that is why you still see fuel in the lines even though the bowl has run out of fuel

The easy test would be to remove the fuel lines from the fuel valves and look to see if gas still flows from the valve with it turned off.

Today i was determined to find out if my petcocks are leaking.I set the tank on a level surface and held a container underneath.I turned my Pingel petcock to reserve and on the right side noticed that the forward nipple has 2 functions off and reserve. In the "off" position nothing came out.In the reserve setting fuel flowed out of the forward nipple.I did the same with the left petcock. However on reserve both nipples worked.I think that is wrong.I also noticed when i started looking at the bike this year and tried to start it that both petcocks didn't want to move at first. The right side positively turns on and off now.The left side which controls the portion of the carbs that are leaking don't want to shut off.The lever only goes so far and i didn't want to force it.I removed the Pingel petcocks and because the filters on those are so long i think what is happening is this. The sides of the tank are tapered and the filters rub against the sides causing it to bind.As soon as the petcock was removed from the left side it now turns on and off positively.I now have to send the petcocks back to Pingel and maybe look at putting shorter filters as they make a model with stubby filters. Also i have to invest in some inline filters as the fuel lines had a lot of crap in them.I could just imagine why my carbs were so dirty looking at the fuel lines.Today i replaced all the fuel lines.

Update-I got my petcocks back from Pingel today.Installed them on the tank and connected lines to the tank.Turned on gas and it started up on the second try.All pipes are now hot.I noticed fuel coming out of carb#4-tapped float bowl with screwdriver handle and gas stopped coming out of carb. One thing i noticed is that the line that goes from the tee to carb 3 & 4 does not have any fuel in the lines.Theres fuel in the tank- not alot less than 1/8 so if the petcocks are on reserve should there be fuel in this line?Bike is running better than ever thanks to the new needle valves and seats.
