speedometer Howl

I recently discovered a howl from the speedometer---when I removed the cable from the speedometer guage, the howling ceased. This happened once before and I unscrewed the cable from guage and oiled the cable going down to the front wheel.
This time that didn't help. Can the guage be lubricated itself or is this a issue where something has to be replaced?
