First would pull the shift cover. Wet cover so either drain oil or lean bike to right same amount as kick stand holds bike to the left.

Check the shift lever is still engaged on shift cam.

If all is good then might need to pull engine.

      Pulled the shift cover off

ok so here are the results

      Shift lever is gripping shaft

the little hook that pulls/pushes the shift cam does not grab it...

I found 5 pins in the oil that drained out.......

      looks bad for me

      where to go from here?

        5 pins

Don't remember how many...but sounds like they may be shift cam dowl pins. Think there just under 1/4" dia and less than 1/2" long.

                Hey Genius,

That's good, a simple fix. The Plate on the end of the shift drum that holds the pins in place can and apparently DID get bent, allowing the pins to fall out. DON'T try just bending the plate back, once it's bent, it looses its strength. YOu can order a NEW ONE From Yamaha, any source you like, and you'll be good to go after that!!

ok, so i just went back out and looked to see if i could see where those pins go and i am not sure........... it looks like the shaft that the shift fork bar guide is sticking out too far as well so the shift lever does not grab the shift cam

                        look at this

ok it apears the shift fork shaft sticks out about 1/4" which keeps the shift lever from engaging the shift cam lobes.

                            Hi, Genius ...

MRO has sent me those pics once upon a time .... the ones that he's looking for now ... were very helpful .... can't remember if I returned 'em ... lol ... I think you could search on 'shift cam' and find 'em ... I've done this job a number of times since then ... too many projects have I ... lol.

What you have circled appears to be the hook that catches the pins that rotate the shift cam that moves the trans back and forth through the gears. Like TC says, flatten the lock washer, unscrew that little 8mm headed bolt and take the stuff off the end of off the shift cam. Then you will clearly see the five little holes where those loose pins came from. Order a new pin washer, cuz yours is history, or maybe even two (who knows how much longer they'll be available?) from your dealer for about 8 bucks ... new bearings are 5 to 8 bucks if one is missing or shows signs of adverse wear... there are two or more different sizes on there, IIRC.

Don't forget to align the dots on the shift shaft and shift lever cogs and properly load the big spring. There is an eccentric bolt that can be turned to align the hash marks on the shift cam and shift lever ... do that with the trans in second ... that 'fine tunes' the shifter throw. Stick it back together, check yer oil and for leaks ... and take 'er for a spin. ... and, yes ... there is no 6th gear on this model ...

i sure do wish it did have a 6th gear........that would make me supper happy. i could keep with the new bikes on top speed.

I guess i was thinking i would be able to see where the pins came out from or the plate that was bent, but if it is behind the shift cam sproket that makes since, but i still dont understand how they can come out.....oh well, it is one of those thing i will probably never understand in this life, just like why we can't have automatic weapons. I will figure it out.
