  • Coils and pod filters

Hey guys, I'm well on my way to restoring the 81 MNS and was wondering if you had thoughts on a few products...

MikesXS coils... are they worth it if the current coils are good? Do they offer more spark than stock?

MikesXS pod filters.... Hows the construction? Would I need to rejet if i went with these and stock exhaust?

NGK standard vs Iridium sparkplugs have you seen any difference in them? Is is worth the cash?

My breaks are sticking some. Should I just rebuild the masters and calipers (and add new SS brake lines) Or .. since they're not leaking just do the pinhole trick on the masters.

    Thanks for any input!

Justmy .02 worth...I installed pods (not K&N, cheap eBay ones) on my bike just to relieve me of the airbox hassle. But I am still running the stock exhaust. My pipes were a straw color before the mod and after 200 miles on the pods they haven't changed color...yet anyway.

I figure the stock exhaust creates enough backpressure to negate the freer (free-er?) flow into the pods making rejetting unnecessary. In other words. same airflow through the pods because of the stock exhaust.

That's my experience anyway...and the pods gave the bike a mean growl in the midrange...I love it!

Cant help you much on the Mikes XS coils since I am running Dynacoils but the pod filters are good. Just make sure that the filter base does not have a big lip that will lcose up any vent holes on the carb body. You might get away without rejetting if the cylinder head and exhaust remain the choke points to the airflow. Change the exhaust and you will definately need to jet up.

I have used platinum plugs before and notice no improvement at all. Not saying they are not going to last a bunch longer but IMHO they are not worth the extra $. I use NGK BP6Es or BP5ES plugs and they last over 10,000 miles. (I use a two plug system since I ride year around).

Just my opinion but years ago i had the carbs re jetted,Kerker exhaust,K & N individual filters,K & N crankcase breather.I wanted more so i bought some Accel coils from Dennis Kirk and had nothing but problems with them.I didn't know that much about my SG back then(1980 something)and had no access to a computer.I think any coil could suffice if its installed right.Go for the ones from Mikes xs.What could it hurt?As far as plugs i think that the NGK plug is the best thing that you could put in the bike.I tried others but always went back to my BP6ES plugs. As far as Pod filters, they in my opinion are a pain.On my SG maybe the rubber is worn, but they like to fall off of mine if i accidentally bump them. But they do work.

thanks for the input guys, I'll research the jetting thing on the pods. but i'll try the Iridum plugs and throw my .02 in. The coils I belive... after reading the the tech section, are worth a try.

When I got my bike it had K&N pods on it, but they kept falling off. After loosing one somewhere between here and who knows where, and another falling off when I sat on the bike I bought a new set from Cycle-Re-Cycle. They were inexpensive and they fit very well. I have some question as to the size of the internal passage of the boots, but they have a little meat to them and I might try to bore them out some.

                MikesXS coils

MikesXS coils are hotter than stock . I want some ! Iridium plugs are the bomb . No need to choke on startups . Long (100k) life . I wont go back . Usually only available in resistor . So you could do away with resistor caps ( a weak point) in a mod . Solid core copper wires ( soldered connections) would complete this picture.
