Ok, meant to post this a few days ago. The seller emailed me back, and here's what he said:

1.) Did the bike have a carb leak at some point? I noticed some discoloration in the headers. If so, has it been fixed?

Actually, I also owned an XJ650 which I sold six months ago and that one did encounter a carb. leak and it was repaired. But since I?ve owned this XJ1100 I?ve never had any carb. leak issues. When I purchased this bike my mechanic at the time told me that the bike was running too rich and that contributed to the slight bluing of the headers.
2.) What caused the discoloration on the left side of the engine around the valve cover gasket?

I just went to the garage to check on your question and while checking the valve cover areas all I spotted was some dirt or grease residue, but thereare no oil leaks on any part of the gaskets. With two jobs I just haven?t taken the necessary time to do a required detail cleaning so what you see is a bike that is being used on and weekly basis.
I ended up winning it, and am greatly looking forward to riding her when I get home!

          Re: 2100

OK, the bike is on the center stand and you are spinning the wheel by hand as a "simulated dyno run?" I hope not!
