  • Torqueing my big nut!

Ok, now that my engine rebuild is almost complete for my project bike, how do I torque the nut on the clutch boss to 51 ft/lbs without busting something trying to hold the outer basket from turning?

I did a search and a few tips suggest tighting it with an impact gun. I could do that and then bend the washer back up but would this be good enough?

I thought of useing a strap wrench but again, I'm afraid to bust the outer basket.

    Thanks,

    Paul

As you look at the clutch basket, you'll see a gear to the upper right of it. There is a notch in the housing to help hold that while you torque it. Half the screwdriver goes in the notch, the other half goes into the gear teeth.

BUT... an impact will work fine... no need to just hammer away on it either. That folded over washer will help keep it in place. German torqued... "Gootentight".

Those clutch baskets are fairly fragile, so I wouldn't use it to leverage against.

        "Good one, Mitch..."

        I've done that before.
(On a lot of bikes, if it was too much of a hassle to take off the bodywork in order to remove the generator cover to turn the crank when doing valve clearances, I'd just put it in 5th gear and spin the engine by spinning the rear tire.)
